Men's Soccer Blanked by Southern Connecticut, 2-0

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A pair of goals from Southern Connecticut State University early in the second half proved to be too much for the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team as they fell to the Owls, 2-0, Saturday afternoon on the road at Jess Dow Field.

With the loss, the Hawks will drop to 2-9 overall and 1-8 in the Northeast-10 conference, while the Owls will surge to a 5-5-1 record with a 5-3-1 stance in the league.

The Owls broke the scoreless draw in the 48th minute as Brandyn Rowlinson beat Saint Anselm goalkeeper Mark Kotsopoulos (Shrewsbury, Mass.) to the left for the 1-0 lead.

The Owls doubled up their lead just under two minutes later when Mads Larsen sent a quick shot past Kotsopoulos after he picked up a pass from Daquan King at 49:08.

Saint Anselm nearly claimed a 1-0 lead with 20 minutes left in the first frame when a Hawk forward sent a header towards the net that hit the cross bar and was punched out by Owl keeper Stephen Sasso.

Southern Connecticut owned a 16-7 shot advantage, including a 5-3 edge in shots on target. Kotsopoulos and Sasso each made three saves.

The Hawks return to action Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. when they travel to Merrimack College. Stay up-to-date with the latest news, including game previews and recaps, directly from the Saint Anselm College athletic department by liking us on Facebook and following us on Twitter @STAHawks.
