Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Plays to 1-1 Draw at So. Connecticut

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Alexa Lucci (Hope, R.I.) scored in the 81st minute to force overtime, as the Saint Anselm College women's soccer team earned a 1-1 tie with Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday evening under the lights at Jess Dow Field.

The Hawks move to 2-5-2 on the season, including 1-4-2 in Northeast-10 play, while the Owls are now 4-2-3, 2-2-3 NE-10.

With time running down and Southern Connecticut ahead by a goal, the Hawks gained the equalizer with 9:08 on the clock when junior Maura Kelly (Weymouth, Mass.) sent a cross from right to left that Lucci put into the right side of the net to knot it at one.

The Hawks nearly ended the match in the 94th minute when senior Kaitlin Oldfield (Epping, N.H.) ran into the box and got a piece of a cross from the right off the foot of junior Siobhan Flaherty (Braintree, Mass.), but the ball ricocheted wide to the right to keep the game tied. Sophomore Jenna Szostak (Carver, Mass.) generated another chance in the 99th minute, but her bid from point blank went wide right.

One of the Hawks best first-half chances came late in the 19th minute off a corner kick. The corner came out to Kelly, who served the ball into the box, where Flaherty deflected it on net, but Southern Connecticut goalkeeper Katelyn Fortier was there to make the save.

Saint Anselm made another bid in the 41st minute when Szostak sent a shot that rolled wide across the goalmouth, but could not be knocked in.

After the game went to the half, scoreless, freshman Rachel Gillies (Auburn, Mass.) attempted to break the deadlock in the 54th minute with a shot on net, but Fortier made the stop again.

Less than a minute later, the Owls broke through when a free kick deflected off Laura Barberia to Lisamarie Tarchini, who headed the ball past Saint Anselm sophomore goalkeeper Gabriella Primera (Kennett Square, Pa.) and into the open right side of the net.

Primera made five saves, while Fortier stopped two shots.

The Owls held a 16-15 edge in shots.

The Hawks return to action Wednesday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. when they travel to take on Merrimack College. The next home match for the Hawks is Saturday, Oct. 6 at 4 p.m. when they play host to the top-ranked College of Saint Rose at Melucci Field.
