COLCHESTER, Vt. – Senior Kaitlin Oldfield (Epping, N.H.) scored in the 80th minute and sophomore goalkeeper Gabriella Primera (Kennett Square, Pa.) recorded her sixth career shutout to lead the Saint Anselm College women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory against Saint Michael's College on Wednesday afternoon at Duffy Field.
The Hawks improve to 2-5-1 and earn their first conference win to move to 1-4-1 in Northeast-10 play. The Purple Knights drop to 1-6-1, 1-4-1 NE-10.
Oldfield snapped the scoreless deadlock with 10:50 remaining in the match when she took advantage of an open net. Saint Michael's goalkeeper Aubrey Ouellet had come 10 yards out of her net to punch away a loose ball that bounced to Oldfield, who – with her back to the goal – raised her leg up to connect with it and put the ball over the out-of-position Ouellet and into the back of the net to give the Hawks a 1-0 edge.
The Purple Knights had outshot Saint Anselm, 8-5, in the second stanza, but Primera stopped all four chances, including one bid that came less than a minute after Oldfield's strike.
Primera made six saves to tally her second shutout of the season, while Ouellet made one save, which came early in the 88th minute off a shot from the foot of junior Amy Millet (Lancaster, Mass.).
Shots were even at 12 apiece, while the Hawks held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks, including 6-0 in the second half.
The Hawks return to action Saturday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. when they travel to take on Southern Connecticut State University. The next home game for the Hawks will be Saturday, Oct. 6 at 4 p.m. when they play host to the College of Saint Rose at Melucci Field.
