Volleyball Starts 3-0 for First Time in School History After Sunday Split

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College volleyball team split with Concordia (N.Y.) College and the University of Bridgeport with match scores of 3-0 and 0-3, respectively, on the final day of the AIC Yellow Jacket Invitational  on Sunday afternoon.

The Hawks now improve to a stellar 3-1 on the 2012 season with Concordia falling to 0-4 and Bridgeport moving to 3-1, as well. This is the fourth time in Hawk volleyball history the team has begun the year at 3-1. With the 3-0 win over Concordia, Saint Anselm stood at 3-0 for the first time in program history. No team has ever gone 4-1 to start the season.

In the afternoon's first match against Concordia, Saint Anselm took the first three sets with scores of 25-19, 25-15 and 29-27. In the third set, Concordia led comfortably at 23-17, but after a 9-3 Saint Anselm run that tied the set at 26, the Hawks came away with the win after two Concordia attack errors and a kill from Kyla Gustavson (Nashua, N.H.).

Margaret Tereschuk (Mission Viejo, Calif.) chipped in with 12 digs and two aces, while freshman Lauren Oxley (Gainesville, Va.) led the Hawks with a .667 hitting percentage. Gustavson had a total of seven kills in the match and teammate Natalie Steinwart (Aurora Ill.) led the Hawks with 28 assists and eight digs. Steinwart was named to the All-Invitational Team for her efforts throughout the weekend tournament.

The Hawks took their first loss of the season against Bridgeport in three sets with scores of 25-19, 25-11 and 25-10.

Melissa Jewett (Newton, Mass.) and Tereschuk led the Hawks with 13 and 15 digs, respectively. Gustavson added six kills and four digs.

The Hawks return to action Tuesday, Sept. 11 as they travel to Southern New Hampshire University at 7 p.m. Stay up-to-date with the latest news, including game previews and recaps, directly from the Saint Anselm College athletic department by friending us on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/STAHawks) and following us on Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/STAHawks).
