SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College volleyball team split with Concordia (N.Y.) College and the University of Bridgeport with match scores of 3-0 and 0-3, respectively, on the final day of the AIC Yellow Jacket Invitational on Sunday afternoon.
The Hawks now improve to a stellar 3-1 on the 2012 season with Concordia falling to 0-4 and Bridgeport moving to 3-1, as well. This is the fourth time in Hawk volleyball history the team has begun the year at 3-1. With the 3-0 win over Concordia, Saint Anselm stood at 3-0 for the first time in program history. No team has ever gone 4-1 to start the season.
In the afternoon's first match against Concordia, Saint Anselm took the first three sets with scores of 25-19, 25-15 and 29-27. In the third set, Concordia led comfortably at 23-17, but after a 9-3 Saint Anselm run that tied the set at 26, the Hawks came away with the win after two Concordia attack errors and a kill from Kyla Gustavson (Nashua, N.H.).
Margaret Tereschuk (Mission Viejo, Calif.) chipped in with 12 digs and two aces, while freshman Lauren Oxley (Gainesville, Va.) led the Hawks with a .667 hitting percentage. Gustavson had a total of seven kills in the match and teammate Natalie Steinwart (Aurora Ill.) led the Hawks with 28 assists and eight digs. Steinwart was named to the All-Invitational Team for her efforts throughout the weekend tournament.
The Hawks took their first loss of the season against Bridgeport in three sets with scores of 25-19, 25-11 and 25-10.
Melissa Jewett (Newton, Mass.) and Tereschuk led the Hawks with 13 and 15 digs, respectively. Gustavson added six kills and four digs.
