MANCHESTER, N.H. – Sophomore Gabriella Primera (Kennett Square, Pa.) made five saves, but Keanna Santos' goal late in the 32nd minute proved to be the difference as the Saint Anselm College women's soccer team was edged, 1-0, by UMass Lowell in Northeast-10 action Tuesday evening under the lights at Grappone Stadium.
The Hawks drop to 1-4-1 on the season, including 0-3-1 in Northeast-10 play, while the Riverhawks improve to 2-3-1, 1-3-0 NE-10.
Santos pushed the ball quickly up the right side and sent a rocket from the top corner of the box that arched over Primera's head and into the top left corner of the net to stake UMass Lowell to a 1-0 lead with 13:07 remaining before halftime.
Overall, the Hawks controlled most of the action, putting seven shots on net. Jane Hatzikonstantis stopped all seven fairly easily, however, to earn the shutout.
Senior Jackie McEvoy (Spring, Texas) and junior Siobhan Flaherty (Braintree, Mass.) each put a pair of shots on net.
The Hawks outshot UMass Lowell, 11-10, including 5-2 in the second half. The Riverhawks held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks, including 3-0 in the second stanza.
The Hawks return to action Saturday, Sept. 22 at 1 p.m. when they play host to Pace University at Grappone Stadium.
