Baseball Sweeps #12 Le Moyne With Pair of One-Run Victories

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Senior John Healy (Cranston, R.I.) went the distance in game one and junior Robert Kelly (Aurora, Colo.) drove in the winning run in game two as the Saint Anselm College baseball team swept 12th-ranked Le Moyne College on Monday afternoon at Sullivan Park. Saint Anselm earned a 4-3 victory in game one before winning, 6-5, in game two.

The Hawks win for the seventh time in 10 games to improve to 15-16-1 on the season, while the Dolphins drop to 23-8-1.

Le Moyne jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning of game one. Vincent Redmond's two-out, two-run single down the right field line staked the Dolphins to a 2-0 lead before Brett Botsford's RBI double down the left field line plated the third run.

Saint Anselm grabbed an unearned run back in the bottom of the inning when senior Jeffrey Criscuolo (Durham, Conn.) was hit by a pitch with two outs, moved to second on a single to right by sophomore Nate Gonya (Wolfeboro, N.H.) and then came around to score when the ball skipped past the right fielder.

The Hawks tied it with a pair of runs in the third. Kelly drove a sacrifice fly to center that scored junior Andrew Chandler (Westford, Mass.), who singled to lead off the inning. Freshman Mike Hayden (Cranston, R.I.) followed with a two-out single to left that scored junior Richie Manzi (Plymouth, N.H.), who also singled, to knot the game at three.

Saint Anselm pushed the go-ahead run across in the sixth when sophomore Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.) tripled to right-center and then scored on a passed ball.

Healy (5-1) tossed his first complete game of the season, giving up three runs on six hits, while striking out nine and walking two.

Chandler was 1-for-3 with a run, while Gonya and sophomore Tito Lluberes (Lawrence, Mass.) were also 1-for-3. Hayden was 1-for-4 with an RBI, while Manzi and Lagasse were also 1-for-4.

The Hawks went on top 1-0 in the second inning of game two when Lluberes scored on a wild pitch after the bases were loaded with nobody out on three straight walks.

The Dolphins tied it in the second on Paul Spiecher's RBI single to left-center and took the lead later in the inning when Nate Reynolds, who got aboard on a walk, scored when Jeff DeLuglio reached on an error.

Le Moyne stretched its lead to 4-1 in the third when Brian Stinson hit a two-out, two-run home run over the left-center field fence.

Saint Anselm trimmed its deficit to one in the sixth when Hayden homered to center leading off the inning and Gonya singled up to the middle to drive in Criscuolo, who walked.

The Hawks tied it in the seventh when Kelly doubled to right center, went to third on Hayden's single and scored after Lagasse reached on an error. Criscuolo then came through with a sac fly to center that scored Hayden and the Hawks led 5-4.

After two quick outs in the eighth, Le Moyne tied it when Botsford reached on an error and went to second before Zack Wiley plated him with a single to right center.

The Hawks went back on top in the bottom of the inning when Lluberes struck out, but reached first when the first baseman dropped the ball, moved to second on Manzi's walk and scored when Kelly singled through the left side.

Junior James Farrington (W. Milford, N.J.) struck out the side in order in the ninth to earn his third save.

Senior Neil Hesek (Northboro, Mass.) started and went five innings, allowing four runs – three earned – on four hits, while striking out seven and walking four. Senior Joe Latino (Holden, Mass.) worked two scoreless innings, giving up two hits and striking out four. Freshman David Kent (N. Falmouth, Mass.) went to 2-0 with the win as he pitched one inning and gave up an unearned run on one hit, striking out a pair.

Hayden went 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Kelly was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Gonya was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Chandler went 1-for-4.

The Hawks return to action Wednesday, April 11 at 3:30 p.m. when they play host to Saint Michael's College in Northeast-10 Northeast Division action at Sullivan Park.
