MANCHESTER, N.H. – Freshman Mike Hayden (Cranston, R.I.) went 4-for-10 with four RBI and senior Sean Hayden (Haverhill, Mass.) tossed seven strong innings as the Saint Anselm College baseball team split a Saturday doubleheader with The College of Saint Rose at Sullivan Park. Saint Rose took game one by an 8-6 final, while Saint Anselm posted an 11-2 victory in the second game.
The Hawks are now 13-16-1 on the season, while the Golden Knights move to 9-18.
Saint Rose took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning of game two. Scott Hladick led off the inning by reaching on catcher's interference and then scored when Daniel Marshall reached on an error. The Golden Knights pushed their second run across when Marshall scored after Brian Maynard grounded into a double play.
Saint Anselm grabbed the lead when it hung a four-spot in the fifth. Sophomore Tito Lluberes (Lawrence, Mass.) walked to lead off the inning and scored when junior Robert Kelly (Aurora, Colo.) doubled down the right field line. Kelly scored to tie it at two when Mike Hayden followed by reaching on an error. Sophomore Nate Gonya (Wolfeboro, N.H.) drew a bases loaded walk to give the Hawks the lead before freshman Joe Morin (Salem, N.H.) was hit with the bases packed to make it 4-2.
The Hawks opened their lead to three in the sixth when Kelly tripled down the right field line and was plated by Mike Hayden, who doubled to the gap in left-center.
Saint Anselm blew it open with six runs in the seventh. Senior Jeffrey Criscuolo (Durham, Conn.) scored the first run when he crossed the plate after a wild pitch. Junior Richie Manzi (Plymouth, N.H.) then walked with the bases loaded to make it 7-2. With the bases still loaded, Kelly was hit by a pitch to bring in another run. Mike Hayden then followed with a single to right-center that scored Lluberes and Manzi to make it 10-2. Kelly later scored on a wild pitch with two outs to cap the scoring.
Sean Hayden (3-3) went seven innings, allowing two runs – none earned – on four hits, while striking out six and not walking a batter. Senior Joe Latino (Holden, Mass.) worked the final two scoreless innings, allowing three hits and a walk, while striking out three.
Kelly was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and three runs scored, while Mike Hayden went 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored. Gonya was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Criscuolo, sophomore Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.) and junior Andrew Chandler (Westford, Mass.) were all 1-for-4.
Saint Rose jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one against Kelly, who started for Saint Anselm. Nikko Wahl led off the game with a double down the right field line, moved to third on A.J. Capone's groundout and scored on Kyle Charron's single to right. Charron then stole both second and third and came around to score on a single to right-center by Hladik.
The Golden Knights doubled their lead in the sixth on Jevonte Osterhout's two-out, two-run single to left-center.
The Hawks grabbed one back in the bottom of the inning when Kelly led off the frame with a single up the middle and then scored when Hayden followed with a double to center.
Saint Anselm trimmed its deficit to just a single run in the seventh when Lagasse stroked a two-out, two-run triple to the gap in right-center to make it 4-3.
Saint Rose opened up some breathing room with a four-spot in the eighth. Marshall had a three-run double down the right field line and Javonte Osterhout came through with an RBI double to left that made it 8-3.
Kelly (1-2) worked the first seven-plus innings, allowing five runs on eight hits, while striking out four and not walking a batter.
The Hawks got two back in the bottom half of the eighth on a two-run single by Manzi that made it 8-5. The home team added another in the ninth when Hayden doubled to left and then scored on a two-out single to center by Gonya, but that was as close as the Hawks would get.
Sophomore Zachary Brian (Stoneham, Mass.) gave up two hits and a walk to the three batters he faced and was charged with three runs. Junior William O'Connor (Worcester, Mass.) tossed two scoreless innings and allowed one hit.
Criscuolo went 3-for-5, while Gonya was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Hayden was 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Hawks return to action Monday, April 9 at 1 p.m. when they play host to Le Moyne College in doubleheader action at Sullivan Park.
