WORCESTER, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College men's lacrosse team was unable to maintain an early 3-0 lead, ultimately falling to the Greyhounds of Assumption College by an 8-7 score Wednesday evening at the Multi-Sport Stadium. The Hawks have lost four straight games and sport an overall record of 8-5 alongside a 5-4 mark within Northeast-10 Conference play. The Greyhounds collect only their third victory of the season (3-10) and their second victory within conference play (2-7).
Saint Anselm jumped out to an early 3-0 lead as captain Tyler Steinetz (Sparta, N.J.), midfielder Ryan Mee (Medway, Mass.) and Kyle Murphy (Middletown, R.I.) each tallied goals to grant the Hawks an early cushion. The Greyhounds, however, would score the next eight goals from seven different goal scorers to take an 8-3 lead.
The Hawks attempted to put together a comeback in the fourth quarter, scoring four goals in the final 3:06 of regulation time, but were unable to overcome their lack of goal scoring in the second and third quarters. Midfielder Jake Mallinson (Middletown, R.I.) and Steinetz sandwiched two goals from attack Andrew Messner (Wakefield, R.I.) but the late charge by Saint Anselm was not enough.
For the Greyhounds, all but two of the goals were scored from non-starters. Garrett Smith collected a team-leading three points from two goals and an assist (2-1=3) while Paul Curran led all Assumption players with two points (1-1=2) off the bench.
Hawks goaltender Jonathon O'Reilly (Plano, Texas) drew the tough-luck loss, despite making 11 saves on Assumption shots. For the Greyhounds, netminder Matt Palubicki earned his third victory of the season by turning aside 15-of-22 shots on goal.
NOTABLES: Hawks attack Andrew Messner has recorded eight goals and five assists for 13 points (8-5=13) across his last five games…Midfielder James Peters (Medway, Mass.) has scored seven goals and two assists for nine points (7-2=9) in his previous six games.
Saint Anselm returns to action this Saturday, Apr. 28 as they celebrate Senior Day prior to the day's 11:00 a.m. contest against the Dolphins of Le Moyne College at Grappone Stadium. Seniors Travis Killeen (Pittsfield, Mass.), Steinetz, Michael DeVita (Annandale, N.J.), Steve Dion (East Lyme, Conn.), Burke Bero (Pepperell, Mass.), Alex Vinciguerra (Canton, Mass.) and Michael McCarthy (Medford, Mass.) will be honored in the ceremony as the seven graduating student-athletes from Saint Anselm.
