WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior Neil Hesek (Northboro, Mass.) allowed one run over 6.2 innings, but the Saint Anselm College baseball team dropped a 4-2 decision in the final game of a three-game series with Bentley University on Monday afternoon at DeFelice Field.
The Hawks fall to 10-14-1 on the season, including 2-1-1 in the Northeast-10 Northeast Division, while the Falcons move to 14-13, 2-2 NE-10 NE.
Bentley drew first blood against Hesek and the Hawks in the fourth when Greg Baggett came through with a two-out RBI triple to right-center.
Saint Anselm jumped on top in the fifth with a pair of runs. Sophomore Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.) led off the inning with a double to right and moved to third on a bunt single by classmate Tito Lluberes (Lawrence, Mass.). Junior Andrew Chandler (Westford, Mass.) then dropped a bunt down the first base line that scored Lagasse and moved Lluberes to second. Senior Jeffrey Criscuolo (Durham, Conn.) followed with a single to right that scored Lluberes to make it 2-1.
Hesek left with two outs in the seventh and the Hawks still ahead by a run. Hesek gave up the one earned run and scattered seven hits, while striking out five and walking two. Sophomore Zachary Brian (Stoneham, Mass.) came in and nailed down the final out of the seventh with a runner in scoring position.
Brian did not fare as well in the eighth, however, as he gave up a leadoff double to Logan Gillis and an RBI single to Bryant Johnson that tied the game, 2-2. Senior Timothy Cooney (E. Bridgewater, Mass.) entered the game and allowed a single to center by Kevin Korwek that moved Johnson to third. After Korwek stole second, Will Brennan drove a sacrifice fly to left that scored Johnson and gave the Falcons a 3-2 lead. They would grab an insurance run when Nate Witkowski singled up the middle to score Korwek with two outs in the inning.
The Hawks went 1-2-3 in the ninth and dropped their only contest of the series.
Brian (0-2) relinquished two runs and two hits in 0.1 innings. Cooney worked 1.0 inning and allowed one run on two hits and a walk.
Lluberes went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Criscuolo and junior Robert Kelly (Aurora, Colo.) were 2-for-4. Lagasse finished 1-for-3 with a run and junior Richie Manzi (Plymouth, Mass.) was 1-for-4.
The Hawks return to action Tuesday, April 3 at 3:30 p.m. when they take on Saint Michael's College.
