MANCHESTER, N.H. – Senior Dan DeCoste (Chelmsford, Mass.) drove in a pair of runs, but the Saint Anselm College baseball team fell to sixth-ranked Southern New Hampshire University, 5-2, Wednesday afternoon at Sullivan Park.
The Hawks fall to 18-19-1 on the season, including 6-4-1 in Northeast-10 Northeast Division play, while the Penmen improve to 33-6, 9-3 NE-10 NE.
The Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first against Southern New Hampshire starter Tim Flight. Sophomore Tito Lluberes (Lawrence, Mass.) led off with a single to right and then moved to third when junior Richie Manzi (Plymouth, N.H.) singled through the right side. After junior Robert Kelly (Aurora, Colo.) drew a walk to load the bases, Flight recorded back-to-back outs. Flight could not get out of the jam, however, as DeCoste drove in a pair with a single to right.
The Penmen grabbed a run back in the top of the second against Saint Anselm starter, senior Timothy Cooney (E. Bridgewater, Mass.). After back-to-back singles by Andy Lalli and Jamie Wollerman put runners at the corners with no one out, Cooney induced a pop up off the bat of Greg Pezzuto for the first out of the inning. Jon Minucci then walked to load the bases before Bryan Toland hit a sacrifice fly to left that scored Lalli to make it 2-1.
SNHU tied the game at two in the top of the sixth when Lalli led off the frame with a solo shot to center.
Cooney went six innings and gave up two runs on five hits, while striking out three and walking two.
The Penmen then grabbed a 5-2 lead in the seventh when Matt Boulter drove a two-out, three-run homer over the right field fence off of freshman David Kent (N. Falmouth, Mass.).
Senior Joe Latino (Holden, Mass.) worked 2.1 shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out a batter. Kent (2-1) went 0.2 innings, allowing three runs on one hit and a walk.
Flight went eight innings, giving up two runs on five hits, while striking out 10 and walking five.
Manzi went 2-for-4 and scored a run, while DeCoste was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Lluberes was 1-for-4 with a run.
The Hawks return to action Thursday, April 19 at 3:30 p.m. when they travel to take on Assumption College. The next home game for the Hawks is Tuesday, April 24 at 3:30 p.m. when they play host to Southern New Hampshire at Sullivan Park.
