Baseball Plays to 13-Inning 4-4 Tie at Assumption

WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore Zachary Brian (Stoneham, Mass.) allowed three earned runs over six innings and the bullpen posted seven shutout innings as the Saint Anselm College baseball team played to a 4-4 tie in 13 innings against Assumption College on Thursday evening at Rocheleau Field.

The Hawks are now 18-19-2, while the Greyhounds move to 10-19-1.

Saint Anselm grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when sophomore Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.) singled through the right side with two outs to score junior Robert Kelly (Aurora, Colo.) from second.

Assumption tied it in the bottom half of the inning when Ysander Figueroa doubled and scored on a single up the middle by Michael Filice. The Greyhounds added another run in the second on Eddie McDonald's single that drove in Nick Napoli, who reached on an error.

The Hawks knotted it at two in the third after freshman Mike Hayden (Cranston, R.I.) singled to plate sophomore Tito Lluberes (Lawrence, Mass.), who led off the frame with a single to center.

The Greyhounds went back up by a run in the bottom of the inning as Shane Keddy single to center, stole second and scored when Tim Quinn singled up the middle.

After two quick outs in the top of the fourth, sophomore Kyle Grumoli (So. Hadley, Mass.) singled through the right side, went to second on a balk and scored when junior Andrew Chandler (Westford, Mass.) doubled down the left field line to tie it at three.

Assumption regained the lead in the bottom of the frame when Filice sent a two-out RBI single back up the middle.

Saint Anselm tied it, 4-4, in the sixth when Chandler reached on an error and sophomore Nate Gonya (Wolfeboro, N.H.), who reached on a single up the middle, came around to score.

Brian allowed four runs – three earned – on 10 hits, while striking out four and walking two through six innings. The Hawks bullpen then took over and shut down the Greyhounds. Junior William O'Connor (Worcester, Mass.) worked 2.1 shutout innings, giving up a hit and a pair of walks. Junior James Farrington (W. Milford, N.J.) also tossed 2.1 shutout innings and allowed two hits, while striking out a batter. Freshman David Kent (N. Falmouth, Mass.) pitched the final 2.1 innings, giving up two hits and four walks, while striking out a pair.

Assumption starter Kevin Mayone went the first six innings and allowed four runs – three earned – on 10 hits, while striking out five and walking one. The Greyhounds' bullpen of Adam Camilleri, Figueroa and Santi Palmer tossed seven hitless innings.

Junior Richie Manzi (Plymouth, N.H.) went 2-for-3, while Hayden was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Grumoli was 2-for-6 with a run scored and Chandler was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The Hawks return to action Saturday, April 21 at noon when they travel to take on Merrimack College in doubleheader action. The next home game for the Hawks is Tuesday, April 24 at 3:30 p.m. when they play host to Southern New Hampshire at Sullivan Park.
