COLCHESTER, Vt. – Senior Neil Hesek (Northboro, Mass.) tossed seven shutout innings and sophomore Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.) drove in the game's only run as the Saint Anselm College baseball team posted a 1-0 victory against Saint Michael's College on Tuesday afternoon at Doc Jacobs Field.
The Hawks take the rubber game of season series to even their record at 18-18-1 on the season, including 6-3-1 in Northeast-10 Northeast Division play, while the Purple Knights fall to 8-20, 2-9 NE-10 NE.
The Hawks went up 1-0 in the top of the first against Saint Michael's starter Nick Myers. Sophomore Tito Lluberes (Lawrence, Mass.) began the game with a single through the left side and then moved to second when junior Richie Manzi (Plymouth, N.H.) was hit by a pitch. With one out, freshman Mike Hayden (Cranston, R.I.) reached on an infield single that loaded the bases with one out. Lagasse then came through with an RBI single to left that plated the first and only run of the game.
Hesek retired the first six batters of the game in order before running into trouble in the third. The Purple Knights loaded the bases with two outs, but Hesek got Alec Tice to fly out to center to work out of the jam. Saint Michael's then put runners at the corners with two outs in the fourth when Hesek induced an inning-ending groundout to first off the bat of Tim McDonnell.
Hesek (2-4) produced his first scoreless outing and has now strung together 10.0 consecutive shutout innings. Hesek allowed five hits, while striking out six and walking one. Freshman David Kent (N. Falmouth, Mass.) worked a perfect eighth and struck out a pair of batters. Junior James Farrington (W. Milford, N.J.) earned his fourth save of the season as he struck out the side in order in the ninth.
Myers allowed one run on six hits, while striking out two and walking two through the first five innings. Corey Livingston pitched four shutout innings in relief, allowing four hits and striking out two.
Manzi was 2-for-4, while Hayden and junior Robert Kelly (Aurora, Colo.) were each 2-for-5. Senior Jeffrey Criscuolo (Durham, Conn.) went 1-for-3. Lagasse was 1-for-4 with an RBI, while Lluberes was 1-for-4 with a run scored. Junior Andrew Chandler (Westford, Mass.) was also 1-for-4.
The Hawks return to action Wednesday, April 18 at 3:30 p.m. when they play host to crosstown rival, Southern New Hampshire University, at Sullivan Park.
