Baseball Sweeps Pair of Low-Scoring Affairs at Bentley

WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior Robert Kelly (Aurora, Colo.) tossed eight shutout innings and drove in a run as the Saint Anselm College baseball team captured victories in a pair of low-scoring contests against Bentley University on Sunday afternoon at DeFelice Field. Saint Anselm earned a 1-0 victory in game one before winning the second game, 3-1.

The Hawks improve to 10-13-1 on the season and remain unbeaten in the Northeast-10 Northeast Division at 2-0-1. The Falcons fall to 13-13, 1-2 NE-10 NE.

In the first game, the Hawks grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when senior Jeffrey Criscuolo (Durham, Conn.) walked to lead off the game and then scored on Kelly's single to center.

Kelly (1-1) did the rest from there as he pitched eight shutout innings, giving up five hits and four walks, while striking out five. Junior James Farrington (W. Milford, N.J.) earned his first save of the season as he worked a hitless ninth, allowing a walk.

Kelly finished 2-for-4, while junior Rett Ostafin (Port St. Lucie, Fla.), sophomore Nate Gonya (Wolfeboro, N.H.) and freshman Mike Hayden (Cranston, R.I.) all went 1-for-4.

In game two, the Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when junior Andrew Chandler (Westford, Mass.) singled up the middle and then scored when classmate Richie Manzi (Plymouth, N.H.) reached on an error with two outs.

The Hawks made it 2-0 the following inning when Gonya doubled to left, moved to third on Ostafin's fly out to center and then scored when sophomore Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.) singled to center.

Bentley got one back in the fifth when Will Brennan singled to center to drive in Greg Baggett, who walked earlier in the inning.

Saint Anselm answered the run in the sixth when Chandler stroked a two-out double to left-center and then scored on Criscuolo's single through the left side.

Senior Sean Hayden (Haverhill, Mass.) worked eight strong innings, giving up one run on five hits, while walking three and striking out four. Farrington earned his second save of the day after working a perfect ninth.

Chandler was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored, while Criscuolo went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Lagasse, Gonya and Kelly were all 1-for-3.

The Hawks return to action Monday, April 2 at 3:30 p.m. when they close out their three-game set with Bentley at DeFelice Field.
