Baseball Blanked, 12-0, in Rubber Match with Rollins

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Mike Howard and Anthony Figliolia combined on a four-hit shutout as Rollins College posted a 12-0 win against the Saint Anselm College baseball team in the rubber game of their three-game set at Alfond Stadium on Monday evening.

The Hawks drop to 3-3, while the Tars improve to 9-4.

Rollins snapped a scoreless deadlock against Saint Anselm starter, senior Neil Hesek (Northboro, Mass.), in the bottom of the fourth. After the Tars went ahead, 1-0, on Brian Lattanzi's fielder's choice, Boston Langley stroked a two-run double to left-center that made it 3-0.

The Tars blew it open with a seven-spot in the fifth against two Saint Anselm relievers. Sean Reilly doubled down the right field line to plate a pair and make it 5-0. Lattanzi then singled up the middle to score Reilly and push the lead to 6-0. A Nick Adams double to left-center made it 8-0 before RBI singles by Zach Persky and Kevin Mager ran the score to 10-0.

Brandon Curson added even more insurance for his team in the eighth, doubling home a pair of runs that made it 12-0.

Howard pitched the first 3.1 innings for Rollins, giving up four hits and six walks, while striking out four. Figliolia earned the win after tossing 5.2 innings of perfect ball, while striking out three.

Hesek (0-2) gave up three runs on nine hits, while striking out a batter and walking one over four innings. Sophomore Zachary Brian (Stoneham, Mass.) relinquished four runs on three hits and a walk, while freshman David Kent (N. Falmouth, Mass.) allowed three runs on four hits, while striking out two and walking one. Classmate Ryan Cosmopulous (Seekonk, Mass.) worked the final inning, giving up two runs – one earned – on a hit and two walks.

Junior Andrew Chandler (Westford, Mass.) went 1-for-2, sophomores Tito Lluberes (Lawrence, Mass.) and Mike DeSimone (Southwick, Mass.) went 1-for-3 and classmate Kyle Grumoli (So. Hadley, Mass.) was 1-for-4.

The Hawks return to action Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. when they take on Eckerd College.
