ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Junior Robert Kelly (Aurora, Colo.) gave up one earned run over 6.1 innings, but the Saint Anselm College baseball team dropped a 6-5 decision against Eckerd College on Monday evening at the Turley Athletic Complex.
The Hawks drop to 3-4 on the season, while the Tritons improve to 7-4.
Saint Anselm jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning when Kelly scored as sophomore Kyle Grumoli (So. Hadley, Mass.) reached on an error and sophomore Tito Lluberes (Lawrence, Mass.) hit a two-run single up the middle.
Eckerd scored one in the bottom half of the inning when Bryant Gibson lined an RBI single to center.
The Hawks expanded their lead to 4-1 in the fifth when sophomore Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.) doubled to left-center to score Kelly, who walked for the second straight inning.
David Regidor's RBI single in the bottom of the fifth made it a two-run game again before a sixth-inning fielder's choice by junior Richie Manzi (Plymouth, N.H.) plated Grumoli, who singled to lead off the frame.
The Tritons trimmed the Saint Anselm lead to 5-3 in the seventh when Dan Capra reached on an error, stole second and then scored on Alex Del Monte's single through the right side.
Eckerd then leapfrogged the Hawks with a three-spot in the eighth. A run scored to make it 5-4 when Del Monte reached on an error. Capra then scored on a throwing error to tie the game before Lee Spinelle's one-out RBI single to left gave the Tritons a 6-5 lead.
The Hawks went 1-2-3 in the ninth.
Kelly gave up three runs – one earned – on seven hits, while striking out five and walking two. Lluberes was tagged with the loss, despite not giving up a hit, as he relinquished three runs – two earned – walking two and striking out one. Junior James Farrington (W. Milford, N.J.) worked the final 0.2 innings and only gave up a hit.
Grumoli went 2-for-4 with a run, while Lagasse was 2-for-5 with a run driven in. Lluberes was 1-for-3 with the pair of RBI and Kelly went 1-for-2 with a pair of runs scored.
The Hawks return to action Wednesday, Feb. 29 at 7 p.m. when they play the final game of the two-game set with Eckerd.
