Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Comes up Short Against UMass Lowell, 51-45

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Sophomore Tori Lehr (Cohasset, Mass.) scored 10 points, but the Saint Anselm College women's basketball team fell to the University of Massachusetts Lowell, 51-45, Tuesday evening in its regular-season home finale at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.

The Hawks drop to 13-13 on the season, including 7-13 in Northeast-10 play, while the River Hawks improve to 11-14, 9-11 NE-10.

Lehr extended her career-best double-digit scoring streak to six games as she shot 5 of 10 from the field, while pulling down five rebounds, recording two steals and handing out an assist.

After UMass Lowell went up 2-0, the Hawks scored seven straight to grab a five-point lead nearly six minutes in. Two straight jumpers from Bianca Simmons sliced the deficit to one, but four straight points later in the half from the Hawks pushed the lead to 13-8 at the 8:30 mark.

A Simmons free throw and a Whitney Wilson layup trimmed the UML lead to two when Lehr knocked down back-to-back jumpers to give Saint Anselm a 17-11 advantage with 5:54 remaining.

Six straight points from the River Hawks knotted the game at 17 with under five minutes to play, but the Hawks ended the half on a 7-2 run, including a three-point play from sophomore Briana Jones (White Plains, N.Y.) that closed the scoring, to take a 24-19 lead into the half.

The River Hawks came out of the locker room on a 5-0 run that tied the game at 24 just 2:28 in, but a jumper by junior Curran Leighton (Dover, N.H.) and a Jones free throw gave Saint Anselm a three-point lead with 14:44 remaining.

The Hawks still led by three at 31-28 when another 5-0 UMass Lowell run – with four points from Simmons – gave the River Hawks a 33-31 lead with 9:04 to play. Saint Anselm regained the lead – 34-33 – after a Leighton free throw and a layup by sophomore Meg Morrissey (So. Kingstown, R.I.), but consecutive 3-pointers and a pair of free throws from Simmons gave the River Hawks a 41-34 lead with 6:08 remaining.

The deficit was still seven when a pair of free throws by senior Megan Howard (St. Paul, Mass.) and baskets by sophomore Ashley Viselli (Groveland, Mass.) and Morrissey made it a one-point game at 44-43 with 2:09 to go. Five straight points from Brianna Wilson and two free throws from Simmons, however, gave the River Hawks their largest lead of the night at 51-43. A Morrissey layup as time expired closed the scoring.

Morrissey tallied nine points, three assists and three rebounds, while Jones posted eight points, four assists, two boards and a steal. Howard chipped in six points and two rebounds. Viselli recorded five points, three rebounds and an assist.

UMass Lowell outshot Saint Anselm, 38 percent (19-50) to 37 percent (17-46) and won the battle on the glass, 32-29. The Hawks controlled the paint by a 24-16 margin.

Simmons led the River Hawks with 27 points.

The Hawks return to action Saturday, Feb. 18 at 1:30 when they travel north to take on Saint Michael's College.
