Women's Basketball Tripped Up by Saint Michael's, 52-41

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Sophomore Kierra Moore (Albany, N.Y.) scored a career- and game-high 14 points, but the Saint Anselm College women's basketball team dropped a 52-41 decision at Saint Michael's College on Saturday afternoon at the Ross Sports Center.

The Hawks drop to 13-14 on the season, including 7-14 in Northeast-10 play, while the Purple Knights improve to 11-14, 8-13.

In addition to points scored, Moore set career highs in field goals made (5) and attempted (14), as well as 3-point field goals made (4) and attempted (12). Moore also added two assists, two rebounds and a steal, while playing all 40 minutes. Classmate Tori Lehr (Cohasset, Mass.) extended her career-best double-digit scoring streak to seven games with 12 points on 5 of 9 shooting from the floor and 2 of 3 shooting at the line. Lehr also pulled down five boards, handed out a pair of helpers and recorded a steal.

Saint Michael's opened the game on a 19-2 run that included nine points from Megan Olsen and another five from Nicole Adach. After a Lehr three-point play stopped the bleeding at the 8:47 mark, the Purple Knights answered with nine straight points, including four from Morgan Jenkins, to make it 28-5 with 5:53 to play in the opening half.

Consecutive 3-pointers from Moore and classmate Ashley Viselli (Groveland, Mass.), followed by Viselli hitting one of two at the line, pulled the Hawks to within 16 at 28-12. After an Alexa Long jumper pushed it to 18, a pair of free throws by senior Megan Howard (St. Paul, Minn.) with 22 seconds left closed the scoring and sent Saint Anselm into the break trailing 30-14.

After Lehr began the second half with one of two from the stripe, Coreen Hennessy scored five straight and Saint Michael's had a 35-15 lead just 1:11 in. Lehr followed with a layup before Moore drained another trey that made it 35-20 at the 17:09 mark.

With the deficit still 15 later in the half, Moore knocked down another 3 and the Hawks were within 42-30 with 6:41 remaining. Long hit one of two at the line before Lehr sank another jumper that cut it to 11 with 5:43 on the clock.

Adach dropped in a layup to open the lead up to 13, but Viselli answered with another trey to trim the Saint Michael's lead to 10 at 45-35 with 3:17 left. Baskets by Olsen and Samantha Steinmetz gave the Purple Knights a 14-point lead before junior Curran Leighton (Dover, N.H.) dropped in a layup that cut it to 12 at 51-39.  Caitlin Quinn hit one of two at the line and Lehr closed the scoring as she knocked down a jumper with two ticks left.

Viselli recorded seven points, three assists and two rebounds.

Saint Michael's outshot Saint Anselm, 43.6 percent (17-39) to 33.3 percent (15-45), including 47.1 percent (8-17) to 27.3 percent (6-22) from beyond the arc and 50 percent (10-20) to 22.2 percent (4-18) in the first half. The Purple Knights controlled the glass by a 32-23 margin, but the Hawks held a 16-10 advantage in the paint and forced 18 turnovers, while turning it over 15 times themselves.

Olsen and Adach each netted 11 points to lead Saint Michael's.

The Hawks wrap up the regular season Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 5:30 p.m. when they travel to take on Stonehill College.
