Volleyball Wins Thriller with So. New Hampshire, 3-1

MANCHESTER, N.H.Kyla Gustavson (Nashua, N.H.) led the Hawks with double figures in kills and digs with 12 and 22, respectively, as the Saint Anselm College volleyball team upended Southern New Hampshire University, 3-1, Tuesday evening at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.

The Hawks now stand at 6-9 overall and 2-3 in the Northeast-10 conference, while the Penmen move to 9-8 on the 2012 season and 1-4 in league play.

Saint Anselm took the first two sets, 25-21 and 25-23, but then let the Penmen creep in and take the third, 25-16. In the fourth set, the game was tied at 15, before three straight Saint Anselm points forced a Southern New Hampshire timeout at 18-15. The Penmen cut their deficit to one, but the Hawks answered with five straight points to widen the gap to 23-17. SNHU responded with a 6-1 run of its own, but Shannon Douglas (Rochester, N.H.) hammered a kill to end the set, 25-23.

Along with Gustavson's career-high 22, three other Hawks posted double digits in digs. Margaret Tereschuk (Mission Viejo, Calif.) added 20, while teammate Melissa Jewett (Newton, Mass.) chipped in 11. Natalie Steinwart (Aurora, Ill.) dished 34 assists along with contributing 11 digs, three kills and two aces.

Douglas assisted with 13 kills and five digs, for a team-high .211 hitting percentage. Melissa Ouellet (Salem, N.H) added six kills, three blocks and four aces over four sets.

On the night, Saint Anselm posted 43 kills, 76 digs and nine service aces.

For the Penmen, Erica Solomon led the way with 14 kills and 16 digs. Catherine Cotton gave out 43 assists.

The Hawks return to action Saturday, Oct. 13 as they travel to American International College in a 1 p.m. matchup. The next home game for the Hawks is Oct. 20 when they play host to Assumption College.
