MANCHESTER, N.H. – Cliff Parker (Cromwell, Conn.) scored just under two minutes into play, but the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team fell to Bentley University, 3-2, Wednesday afternoon at Melucci Field.
With the win, the Hawks drop to 5-8-1 overall and stand even at 5-5-0 in the Northeast-10 conference, while the Falcons improve to 8-3-2 and 6-2-2 in league play.
Saint Anselm struck right away at 1:52 when Matthew McQueeney (Hooksett, N.H.) sent a corner kick from the left side into the middle of the box where it found Zach Wheeler (Derry, N.H.). Wheeler dished the ball to the right post where Parker was standing as he kicked the ball into the top of the net, using his heel, and it ricocheted off the crossbar and into the goal.
The Hawks extended their lead to two at 29:10 when Maximillian Glebocki (Wilbraham, Mass.) blasted a penalty kick into the right side past Bentley goalkeeper Alex Pilitsis.
Bentley scored three unanswered goals in the second frame to win the game.
The Falcons jumped on the board at 58:44 when Weston Zeiner served the ball into the box finding Andrew Fenn, who gathered up the loose ball and netted it just inside the left post.
Bentley tied things up at two at 68:26 when Tyler Kahn, on the right, sent the ball into the right side of the net past Saint Anselm goalkeeper Eric Moriarty (Center Harbor, N.H.).
Kahn scored his second goal of the night and the game-winning goal with 15:31 left on the clock. Matthew Leibowitz sent a corner kick sailing into the box where it found Kahn and he put it away to make it a 3-2 game.
Saint Anselm had a chance to tie with 6:20 remaining in the game as Parker sent a throw-in to Wheeler and he sent a shot towards the left side of the net that was stopped by a diving Pilitsis.
Moriarty made five saves, while Pilitsis made six saves to earn the win.
Saint Anselm held a 17-15 edge in shots, as well as a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Hawks return to action Saturday, Oct. 20 when they play host to American International College in a 3 p.m. matchup at Melucci Field for senior day.
