Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Men's Ice Hockey Storms Past Nor'easters, 6-4

MANCHESTER, N.H. -
Defenseman Alex Pascal (Blue Bell, Pa.) and forward Kevin Vanous (Virginia Beach, Va.) each recorded two-goal games as the Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team posted a 6-4 victory over the University of New England Saturday night at Thomas F. Sullivan Arena.  With the victory, the Hawks improve to 6-3-3 overall on the season and 3-3-2 within the ECAC Men's East.  The loss drops the Nor'easters to a 3-8-2 overall record alongside a 1-7-0 conference record.

Vanous' second goal of the game at 8:56 of the third period proved to be the game-winning goal.  Breaking into the zone on a 3-on-2 rush following a Nor'easters goal just 14 seconds prior, a quick give-and-go with forward Johnny Daniels (Andover, Mass.) ended with Vanous' tucking the puck within the right post past New England goaltender Ian Edwards for the Hawks' fifth goal of the game.  Pascal also collected an assist on the play.

Pascal scored his second goal of the season at 1:40 of the second period, knotting the score at one apiece early in the middle stanza.  From behind the net, forward Tim King (Weymouth, Mass.) sent a pass out to the right wing corner where it was collected by forward Mike Richard (Derry, N.H.).  Richard swung a pass through the crease where Pascal crashed the net and fired a shot on goal.  Edwards turned the initial shot aside, but the rebound was flipped past the goaltenders' pad for the score.

Just under five minutes later, Pascal added his second goal of the game and third goal of the season at 5:33 of the second period, lifting the Hawks to a 2-1 lead.  Skating from behind the goal toward the slot, Richard found an open Pascal at the top of the slot.  Pascal then took a stride on the goal and blasted a shot past Edwards for the Hawks' first power play goal of the game.

With Saint Anselm defenseman Steve Mollo (Saunderstown, R.I.) in the penalty box for interference at 9:39, Vanous scored a shorthanded goal to place the Hawks ahead by a 4-1 margin.  Defenseman Greg Crovo (Melrose, Mass.) forced a turnover in the neutral zone that was tipped to forward Sean Jenkins (Boston, Mass.).  Catching an opportunity to feed a streaking Vanous, Jenkins forced the puck forward to the streaking forward.  A simple wrist shot near the left face-off dot beat Edwards for the shorthanded goal.

Tucker Mullin (Andover, Mass.) scored the Hawks second shorthanded goal of the game at 3:41 of the third period, extending the Saint Anselm lead to 4-1.  Initiating the play with an aggressive forecheck in the neutral zone, Mullin tapped the puck into the Nor'easters defensive zone.  Continuing the aggressive play, Mullin then forced a second turnover in the left wing corner that spilled up to defenseman Greg Merrill (Brighton, Mich.) who made a nice play to keep the puck in the zone.  Merrill then dished the puck up to Mullin, who deked Edwards and beat him just inside the right post for the score.

Jenkins scored his sixth goal of the season at 11:44 of the third period, placing the Hawks ahead by a 6-2 margin near the midway point of the final period.  Merrill fired a blast from the top of the slot that was blocked by a Nor'easters defender between the hash marks.  Taking the puck toward the goal, Jenkins sniped the top portion of the goal, beating Edwards and recording the Hawks' sixth goal of the game in the process.

New England's Chris Glover recorded the lone first period goal for either side, forcing home a feed from Nick Kolb and Scott McManaman.  Following a silent middle stanza for the Nor'easters offense, New England erupted for three third period goals.  McManaman scored an even-strength goal at 8:41, Zach Lokey scored a power-play goal at 16:46 and John Tuell scored his first of the season at 18:51 with the goaltender out in favor of the extra skater.

Cumulatively, McManaman led the offensive attack, recording a goal and two assists for three points (1-2=3).  Lokey added the Nor'easters other multiple-point game, scoring a late goal and assisting McManaman's seventh goal of the season in the third period.

Hawks goaltender Nick Dries (Commerce Township, Mich.) earned the victory in net, improving to 3-3-2 overall on the season by turning aside 28-of-32 shots on goal.  Edwards drew the loss, his sixth of the season (3-6-1) and allowed six goals on 31 shots.

Saint Anselm was 1-for-9 on the power play.  The Nor'easters were 2-for-7 with the man advantage.
