MANCHESTER, N.H. - Charlotte Tencza (Greenfield, Mass) posted a team-best 17 kills and did not record an error in the match as the Saint Anselm College volleyball team powered its way past the Greyhounds of Assumption College by a 3-0 final (25-18, 25-22, 25-20) Thursday evening at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium. With the victory, the Hawks collect their second win of the season and improve to 2-6 overall. The Greyhounds fall below the .500 mark with an overall record of 4-5. Both teams remain 0-1 on the season within the Northeast-10 Conference.
The Hawks held off the Greyhounds in the first set, aided by Tencza's eight first-set kills. Holland McNabb (Huntington Beach, Calif.) contributed four of her 12 kills on the evening in the first set with Margaret Tereschuk (Mission Viejo, Calif.) contributing three digs defensively in the first set.
In the second set with the score at 22-21 in favor of the Hawks, a kill by Lauren Ross (Dracut, Mass.) preceded two Tencza kills to ward off the hard-charging Greyhounds to capture the 2-0 game lead. Tereschuk led the way defensively with seven digs in the second set with Tencza and McNabb contributing a total of four kills apiece.
An offensive attack by Tencza, Ross and McNabb silenced the Greyhounds in the third set. Rebounding from an early Assumption rally, the Hawks went on a six-point charge to extend the lead to 9-5. From that point forward, Saint Anselm would not give up their lead, as three different Hawks players posted at least three kills in the final match.
Natalie Steinwart (Aurora, Ill.) posted a team-high 29 assists, her fourth 25+ assist game of the season. Kylie Kozlowski (Quincy, Mass.) tallied a team-high three services aces off of the bench. Lauren Ostafin set the pace for the Greyhounds with seven kills, with Kristin Flatekval assisting on 16 Assumption kills. Libero Steph Whooten contributed defensively in the game with eight digs.
Saint Anselm has now defeated Assumption three sets to zero for the second straight season under Head Coach Kelly Murphy. The Greyhounds last won a set in Stoutenburgh Gymnasium on September 13, 2009.
