GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Jonathan Gonzalez threw a one-hit shutout as Adelphi University defeated the Saint Anselm College baseball team, 8-0, Sunday afternoon at Bonomo Field.
The Hawks drop to 22-21 on the season, including 12-12 in Northeast-10 play, while the Panthers improve to 29-11-2, 17-6-1 NE-10.
Gonzalez went the distance, allowing only a fourth-inning single to right by senior Matt Sucharewicz (Peabody, Mass.). He struck out 10 and walked just two.
The game was scoreless until the fifth when Omar Velazquez hit an RBI double to left that made it 1-0. The Panthers grabbed two more in the sixth on an RBI double to right-center by Richard McCarren and a run-scoring triple to right from Anthony Zarrella. Velazquez hit a solo shot to left in the seventh that made it 4-0 and chased Saint Anselm starter Sean Hayden (Haverhill, Mass.).
Hayden (4-1) worked the first 62/3 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits, while striking out five and walking three.
Freshman Zachary Brian (Stoneham, Mass.) nailed down the final out of the seventh, but allowed another triple to center by Zarrella in the eighth. Sophomore William O'Connor (Worcester, Mass.) relieved Brian and allowed an RBI single to right by Richard Mejia and a two-run homer to left by Trevor Thorstensen.
Brian gave up two runs on three hits in 1/3 of an inning, while O'Connor allowed two runs on two hits in one inning of work.
Velazquez finished 4-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored.
The Hawks return to action Monday, May 1 at 3:30 p.m. when they travel to take on Bentley University.
