WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior Timothy Cooney (East Bridgewater, Mass.) pitched 72/3 strong innings as the Saint Anselm College baseball team posted a 7-3 victory against Bentley University on Monday afternoon at DeFelice Field.
The Hawks win for the fifth time in their last six games to improve to 23-21 on the season, including 13-12 in Northeast-10 play, and remain in the hunt for a spot in the postseason. The Falcons fall to 13-26, 7-15 NE-10.
Saint Anselm used a four-run fourth against Bentley starter JP Ashline to jump out to an early 4-0 lead. Freshman Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.) and junior Jeffrey Criscuolo knocked in the first two runs with RBI singles. The pair then executed a successful double steal, with Lagasse swiping home to make it 3-0. Freshman Tito Lluberes (Lawrence, Mass.) followed with a single to center that scored Criscuolo.
Senior James Garrigan (Plymouth, Mass.) widened his team's lead to five with an RBI single to left in the fourth. The Hawks then made it 7-0 in the seventh on RBI doubles by senior TJ Murphy (Reading, Mass.) and Criscuolo.
Cooney breezed through the first 41/3 without allowing a hit and did not allow a run until the eighth when a Chris Hardy single plated Bentley's first run. Cooney (2-4) gave up just one run on four hits in his 72/3 innings of work, while striking out four and walking three.
Bentley tacked on two in the ninth on an RBI single by Lamarre Rey and a double by Nathan Witkowski, but that was as close as the Falcons would get.
Junior Bret Bartlett (Duxbury, Mass.) worked a 1/3 of an inning and relinquished one run on one hit and a walk. Sophomore William O'Connor (Worcester, Mass.) worked the final inning and gave up a run on two hits.
Senior Matt Sucharewicz (Peabody, Mass.) collected three hits and scored a run in his five at-bats. Criscuolo was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a run scored, while Murphy went 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Lagasse was 1-for-3, drove in a run and scored another.
The Hawks and Falcons meet again Tuesday, May 2 (3:30 p.m.) at Sullivan Park in Saint Anselm's regular-season finale.
