Men's Lacrosse Earns First Win of the Season, 8-4, at Pace

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Freshmen Andrew Messner (Wakefield, R.I.) and Jake Mallinson (Middletown, R.I.) each scored a pair of goals to lead the Saint Anselm College men's lacrosse team to an 8-4 victory against Pace University on Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks improve to 1-7 on the season, including 1-4 in Northeast-10 play, while the Setters fall to 4-5, 1-4 NE-10.

Pace scored the game's first three goals, but Saint Anselm roared back with seven unanswered scores, including Mallinson's first with 8:11 left in the opening half that made it 3-1 at the break. Freshman Tim Glynn (Suffield, Conn.) found the back of the net just 2:51 into the third quarter, before senior Ryan Henry (Norwood, Mass.) knotted the game at three with 7:19 to play. Mallinson then scored just 15 seconds later to give the Hawks their first lead of the game, 4-3, heading into the final quarter.

Messner opened the fourth quarter with two goals and junior Tyler Steinetz (Sparta, N.J.) added one with 5:22 to play that made it 7-3. Pace cut it to three with 2:05 remaining, but junior Travis Killeen (Pittsfield, Mass.) sealed the Hawks' first win of the year when he found the back of the net with 40 seconds to play.

Senior goalkeeper Dan Flynn (Wakefield, Mass.) stopped 16 of the 20 shots he faced, while Alex Cain made 15 saves.

Shots were even at 34 apiece, as were faceoffs at eight each. Saint Anselm was 2-for-4 on its extra-man opportunities, while Pace was just 2-for-11.

The Hawks return to action Wednesday, April 13 (4 p.m.) when they play host to Merrimack College.
