MANCHESTER, N.H. – Junior Alex Vinciguerra (Canton, Mass.) and freshmen Tim Glynn (Suffield, Conn.) and Jake Mallinson (Middletown, R.I.) each registered three points, but the Saint Anselm College men's lacrosse team was edged, 13-12, by Assumption College on Saturday afternoon at Grappone Stadium.
The Hawks fall to 1-8 on the season, including 1-5 in Northeast-10 play, while the Greyhounds improve to 8-5, 4-4 NE-10.
Vinciguerra, who entered the game with two career points on two goals, netted a career-best two goals and earned his first career assist. Glynn found the back of the net three times, while Mallinson scored twice and added an assist.
Connor MacNeil led the Greyhounds with eight points on three goals and five assists.
After Assumption struck first just two minutes into the game, goals by Vinciguerra, Mallinson and Glynn gave Saint Anselm a 3-1 lead until MacNeil cut the deficit in half at the 4:30 mark of the first quarter.
Vinciguerra, classmate Tyler Steinetz (Sparta, N.J.) and Glynn all scored to open the second quarter and widen the Hawks' lead to 6-2. The goals by Vinciguerra and Steinetz came just six seconds apart. Assumption again cut its deficit in half, but sophomore Daniel Sullivan (Rumford, R.I.) scored with 2:17 remaining before halftime, followed by a Mallinson goal just nine seconds later, to make it 8-4.
The Greyhounds were not done in the second half, however, scoring with 32 second left and again with 21 seconds left to head into the break trailing just 8-6. The Greyhounds carried that momentum into the third quarter, scoring the stanza's only three goals to take a 9-8 advantage into the final quarter.
After Sullivan scored just 2:17 into the fourth to knot it at nine, Assumption buried four unanswered goals to grab a 13-9 lead with 9:08 to play. Following a handful of penalties against the Greyhounds, freshman Andrew Messner (Wakefield, R.I.) took advantage with a man-up goal with 3:24 to play. Junior Michael DeVita (Annandale, N.J.) then found the back of the net with 1:10 on the clock, bringing the Hawks to within 13-11.
Glynn made things even more interesting, adding a man-up goal with 16 seconds to play to cut the Saint Anselm deficit to just one. The Hawks won the ensuing faceoff, but generated just one shot as time expired as the Greyhounds escaped with the one-goal victory.
Senior Ryan Henry (Norwood, Mass.) earned a pair of assists, while Messner and senior Justin Mambro (Hanover, Mass.) each tallied one helper.
Senior goalkeeper Dan Flynn (Wakefield, Mass.) made nine saves for the Hawks. Scott Vogel stopped 13 shots for the Greyhounds, while Matt Palubicki made one save after he relieved Vogel for the final 1:49 of the third and the first 36 seconds of the fourth.
Saint Anselm outshot Assumption, 44-33, including 18-9 in the final quarter. The Hawks were 5-for-14 on their extra-man opportunities, including 3-for-9 in the fourth quarter, while the Greyhounds were 3-for-5.
The Hawks return to action Tuesday, April 19 at 4 p.m. when they head north to take on Saint Michael's College.
