Baseball Tripped Up by First-Place UMass Lowell, 12-2

LOWELL, Mass. – Freshman Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.) and junior Jeffrey Criscuolo (Durham, Conn.) each drove in runs, but it was not enough as the Saint Anselm College baseball team fell to the University of Massachusetts Lowell, 12-2, at LeLacheur Park on Wednesday afternoon.

The Hawks drop to 11-13 on the season, including 3-6 in Northeast-10 play. The River Hawks improve to 21-3 and sit atop the NE-10 standings at 8-1.

UMass Lowell jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first off of Saint Anselm starter Joe Latino (Holden, Mass.). Latino retired two of the first three batters he faced, but relinquished four straight hits as the River Hawks pushed three across the plate.

Saint Anselm got on the board in the top half of the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Lagasse, but UMass Lowell matched the run in the bottom of the inning to make it 4-1. The River Hawks broke it open in the fifth, however, chasing Latino as six of the 10 batters they sent to the plate scored.

The River Hawks added two more in the eighth off junior reliever Bret Bartlett (Duxbury, Mass.) to make it 12-1. Criscuolo singled to left in the ninth to drive in Saint Anselm's second run of the game, but the Hawks would strand two as UMass Lowell sealed the victory.

Latino (1-1) went the first 4.1 innings, allowing eight runs on 11 hits and striking out one. Bartlett worked three innings and gave up four runs – two earned – on five hits, while striking out one and walking two. Junior Timothy Cooney (East Bridgewater, Mass.) retired both batters he faced in the eighth.

The Hawks return to action Thursday, April 7 at 3:30 p.m. when they play host to the River Hawks in their first home game of the year at Sullivan Park.
