MANCHESTER, N.H. – Senior Matt Sucharewicz (Peabody, Mass.) and junior Jeffrey Criscuolo (Durham, Conn.) each drove in runs, but the Saint Anselm College baseball team was defeated by the University of Massachusetts Lowell, 13-3, in its home opener at Sullivan Park on Thursday afternoon.
The Hawks drop to 11-14 on the season, including 3-7 in Northeast-10 play. The River Hawks, who sweep the season series from Saint Anselm following a 12-2 win at home Wednesday, improve to 22-3 and sit atop the NE-10 standings at 9-1.
UMass Lowell grabbed two runs in the top of the first when Cam Kneeland hit a two-run homer two left off starter Neil Hesek (Northboro, Mass.). The River Hawks added two more against Hesek in fourth, on RBI singles by Bryan Deuel and Kneeland, to make it 4-0.
Saint Anselm struck back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. After James Garrigan (Plymouth, Mass.) walked to lead off the inning and moved to third on a single to right by sophomore Robert Kelly (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.), Sucharewicz singled to right to score Garrigan and put the Hawks on the board. Following two quick outs, Criscuolo doubled over the head of the centerfielder to score Kelly. Sucharewicz then came around to score on an errant throw and just like that it was 4-3.
UMass Lowell, however, answered with two in the sixth, three in the seventh and four in the ninth to put the game away.
Hesek (1-2) went the first 31/3 innings, giving up four runs on eight hits. He struck out three and walked two. Sophomore James Farrington (West Milford, N.J.) tossed 21/3 and gave up a pair of runs on four hits and two walks. Freshman Tito Lluberes (Lawrence, Mass.) threw 11/3 while allowing three runs – all unearned – on two hits. He struck out two and walked two. Freshman Zachary Brian (Stoneham, Mass.) went 12/3, relinquishing four runs – all unearned – on two hits and three walks. Freshman Derek Amoroso (Newport, Maine) finished it out with a hit and a walk over a third of an inning.
Criscuolo and Kelly each went 2-for-4.
The Hawks return to action Saturday, April 9 (12/3 p.m.) when they play host to Pace University at Sullivan Park.
