Baseball Loses 5-4 Thriller at Stonehill

EASTON, Mass. – Junior Sean Hayden (Haverhill, Mass.) tossed eight strong innings and senior James Garrigan (Plymouth, Mass.) and freshman Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.) each homered, but the Saint Anselm College baseball team suffered a 5-4 loss against Stonehill College on Tuesday afternoon at Lou Gorman Field.

The Hawks drop to 18-20 on the season, including 8-11 in Northeast-10 play, while the Skyhawks improve to 28-12, 11-7 NE-10.

Saint Anselm jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on a sacrifice fly by senior Matt Sucharewicz (Peabody, Mass.) that scored freshman Tito Lluberes (Lawrence, Mass.), who singled to lead off the game.

The game stayed that way until the sixth when sophomore Robert Kelly (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) doubled and later scored to make it 2-0. Lagasse's homer in the seventh and Garrigan's blast in the eighth put the Hawks in the driver's seat with a 4-0 lead.

The Skyhawks started the rally in the bottom of the eighth, scoring three times against Hayden, who had allowed just three hits over seven shutout innings entering the frame.

Saint Anselm took their 4-3 lead into the ninth with sophomore James Farrington (West Milford, N.J.) coming on to close it out. Angelo Bruno led off the inning with a double to the gap in right-center and advanced to third on a groundout. Mike Magnussen followed with a single through the left side that scored Bruno and knotted the game at four.

Pinch runner Mitch Beaulieu swiped second and went to third on an error, putting the winning run 90 feet away with just one out. After a walk to Steve Popp, Mike Zeiner dropped down a bunt that scored Beaulieu and gave Stonehill the 5-4 win.

Hayden went eight innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, while striking out six and walking one. Farrington (2-2) went a 1/3 of an inning, giving up two runs – one earned – on two hits and a walk.

Stonehill starter Bryan Galligan worked eight innings and gave up four runs – three earned – on eight hits. He struck out five and walked one. Zach Soulier pitched a scoreless ninth, giving up two hits and picking up a strikeout.

Kelly went 2-for-4 and scored a run. Senior TJ Murphy (Reading, Mass.) and junior Jeffrey Criscuolo (Durham, Conn.) were also 2-for-4. Garrigan and Lagasse each went 1-for-4 with solo home runs.

The Hawks return to action Wednesday, April 27 at 3:30 p.m. when they travel to take on Merrimack College.
