Baseball Uses Seven-Run Eighth to Post 12-1 Win at Merrimack

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Junior Timothy Cooney (East Bridgewater, Mass.) allowed just one run in a complete-game effort, while the offense pounded out 12 runs on 15 hits as the Saint Anselm College baseball team earned a 12-1 victory against Merrimack College on Wednesday afternoon at Warrior Diamond.

The Hawks improve to 19-20 on the season, including 9-11 in Northeast-10 play, while the Warriors fall to 11-22, 3-15 NE-10.

Merrimack moved out to a 1-0 lead in the first after Mark O'Flynn doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a wild pitch.

Saint Anselm would tie the game in the second on an RBI double by freshman Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.) and go ahead in the third on an RBI groundout by sophomore Robert Kelly (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.).

It remained a 2-1 game until the seventh when senior Steven Panza (Watertown, Mass.) singled, moved to second on an RBI single by freshman Tito Lluberes (Lawrence, Mass.) and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-1.

The eighth inning is when the Hawks blew it open, hanging a seven-spot on the Warriors after sending 11 batters to the plate. Another RBI double by Lagasse and an RBI single from junior Jeffrey Criscuolo (Durham, Conn.) made it 6-1. A two-run single from senior James Garrigan (Plymouth, Mass.) opened it up to 8-1 before junior Daniel DeCoste (Chelmsford, Mass.) stroked a three-run double to center. The Hawks tacked on one in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Rett Ostafin (Avon, Conn.).

Cooney (1-4) made it all stand up, going the distance while allowing one run on six hits. He struck out eight and walked just one.

Lagasse was 2-for-3 with two RBI, walked and scored a pair of runs. DeCoste was on base four times, going 3-for-4 with a walk, three RBI and two runs scored. Lluberes was 3-for-5 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored, while Criscuolo went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Panza went 1-for-2, walked and scored three times.
