Baseball Pulls Ahead in Eighth for 6-5 Victory against SNHU

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Freshman Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.) went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs as the Saint Anselm College baseball team earned a 6-5 victory against Southern New Hampshire University on Monday afternoon in a Northeast-10 matchup at Sullivan park.

With the win, the Hawks improve to 17-16 (7-8 NE-10) on the season, while the Penmen fall to 18-16, 6-8 NE-10.

After a quiet first inning, Southern New Hampshire was able to knock in a run with a string of hits in the second.  In the bottom half of the inning, following a single through the right side by senior TJ Murphy (Reading, Mass.), Lagasse smacked one into the parking lot down the left field line for his first home run of the season to give the Hawks a 2-1 advantage.

Following a one-run third for SNHU, senior James Garrigan (Plymouth, Mass.) retaliated by knocking his second blast of the season over the right-center field fence, breaking the tie by giving Saint Anselm the 3-2 lead.

In the top of the fifth, Southern New Hampshire was able to send two more across the plate thanks to freshman Albert Stanton. This would prove to be the end for Hawks starter Sean Hayden (Haverhill, Mass.), who went five innings, allowing four runs – three earned – on nine hits, while walking one and striking out four.

The Hawks allowed one run behind their reliever, junior Joe Latino (Holden, Mass.), but would hold the Penmen to those five runs throughout the last few frames. Latino tossed 22/3 and struck out two before being replaced by sophomore James Farrington (West Milford, N.J.).

Saint Anselm rallied to take the lead in the bottom of the eighth, scoring three off of Penmen reliever Jon Massad. First baseman Robert Kelly (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) started his team off strong with a double into the right-center gap, and was driven home on another two-base knock off the bat of senior catcher Matt Sucharewicz (Peabody, Mass.), closing the Penmen lead to just one run. Sophomore Andrew Chandler (Westford, Mass.) replaced Sucharewicz following his slide into second, and was advanced to third on another hard hit single to right field by Murphy. Lagasse attacked next, stroking a double into right-center, advancing Murphy to third scoring Chandler for the tying run. Junior Jeffrey Criscuolo (Durham, Conn.) hit into a routine play at second, but was able to pick up an RBI as Murphy crossed the dish for the eventual game-winning run after the Penmen infield took the sure out.

Farrington (2-1) went 11/3 and allowed just one hit to earn the win.

Kelly went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Sucharewicz, Murphy and Lagasse were each 2-for-4 with a combined four RBI and three runs scored.

The Hawks return to action Tuesday, April 19 at 3:30 p.m. when they travel to take on Division I Dartmouth College.
