Baseball Drops Game 1 at Adelphi, 5-2; Game 2 Rained Out

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Freshman Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.) drove in a run, but the Saint Anselm College baseball team dropped a 5-2 decision against Adelphi University in game one at Bonomo Field on Saturday afternoon. Game two was rained out and will be made up at a later date.

The Hawks fall to 16-16 on the season, including 6-8 in Northeast-10 play, while the Panthers improve to 21-10-1, 10-5 NE-10.

Adelphi grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second before Saint Anselm tied it in the top of the third when freshman Tito Lluberes (Lawrence, Mass.) singled to center and later scored on a wild pitch. The Hawks went ahead 2-1 the following inning when Lagasse hit a two-out triple to center that scored senior TJ Murphy (Reading, Mass.), who singled to right and stole second before Lagasse's big two-out hit.

The Panthers went ahead in the bottom of the inning as they hung a three-spot on starter Neil Hesek (Northboro, Mass.). All three runs were unearned after the Hawks committed two errors behind Hesek. Adelphi added an insurance run in the seventh to go ahead, 5-2.

Hesek (1-5, 3.80 ERA) tossed 62/3 innings, allowing five runs – two earned – on nine hits. He struck out five and walked one. Sophomore James Farrington (West Milford, N.J.) went the final 11/3 and allowed one hit while striking out two.

Adelphi starter Robert Nixon went the distance, giving up two runs while scattering seven hits. He struck out five and walked two.

Lagasse was 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Murphy went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

The Hawks return to action Sunday, April 17 (2 p.m.) when they play host to Southern New Hampshire University at Sullivan Park.
