BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Freshman Andrew Messner (Wakefield, R.I.) and senior Ryan Henry (Norwood, Mass.) each notched go-ahead goals, but it was not enough as the Saint Anselm College men's lacrosse team suffered a 10-2 defeat against No. 1-ranked C.W. Post on Wednesday afternoon at Hickox Field.
The Hawks drop to 0-3 on the young season, while the Pioneers improve to a perfect 8-0.
Saint Anselm grabbed a 1-0 lead just four minutes in when Messner found the back of the net for an unassisted tally. The Pioneers answered less than a minute later, however, when Jimmy Johnston beat senior goalkeeper Dan Flynn (Wakefield, Mass.) to knot it at one.
The Hawks went ahead again just under a minute and a half later when Henry took a short feed from junior Mike McCarthy (Medford, Mass.) and deposited his shot into the back of the net to make it 2-1.
From there, however, the Pioneers rattled off nine unanswered goals, including five in the second quarter. Mike Messina's game-high three goals all came during that second-quarter outburst.
Flynn made 17 saves for the Hawks, while C.W. Post goalkeeper Mike Giordano stopped 10 shots.
C.W. Post outshot Saint Anselm, 40-14, held a 34-25 advantage in ground balls and was 11-for-15 on face-offs.
Saint Anselm returns to action Saturday, March 26 at 3 p.m. when it wraps up its four-game road swing in its conference opener at Le Moyne.
