NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Saint Anselm College men's soccer team held a two goal lead near the close of the second half of Saturday afternoon's contest, but three goals by the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University late in the contest upended the Hawks by a 3-2 overtime score. With the victory, the Owls improve to 5-5 overall on the season and 4-3 within Northeast-10 Conference play. The Hawks fall to 4-6-2 overall on the season and to 1-5-1 within the conference.
Paul Templeton scored the game-winning goal for the Owls at 96:57 of the first overtime period off of a feed from Ariel Lobo. Saint Anselm has now dropped three straight games overall, three straight games on the road and three straight overtime games in total.
George Lamptey (Worcester, Mass.) opened the scoring for the Hawks at 5:45 of the first period. Off of a corner kick by Keesen Howe (Norwich, Conn.), Lamptey headed home the ball into the top right hand corner of the net, beating Owls goaltender Andrew Esposito. Joshua Rocco (North Reading, Mass.) scored the second Saint Anselm goal of the game, collecting a pass from Lamptey within the box and forcing it home for the score.
The Hawks would hold the lead for the majority of the second half, but two goals only 1:14 apart with under five minutes remaining in regulation forced overtime for Southern Connecticut. Jon Eckford scored an un-assisted goal at 85:18 following a Hawks turnover in the box. Doural Scott scored on a breakaway following a Luke Perry pass with just one minute and 14 seconds after Eckford's strike to force overtime.
Eric Moriarty (Center Harbor, N.H.) turned aside eight-of-11 shots on goal in the contest and drew the loss. Esposito collected the victory by stopping four-of-six shots on net that he faced.
The Hawks return to action Tuesday, Oct. 11 as they travel to face-off against the Greyhounds of Assumption College in a 4:00 p.m. contest.
