MANCHESTER, N.H. - Despite 14 kills by Charlotte Tencza (Greenfield, Mass.), the Saint Anselm College volleyball team fell to the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University by a 3-0 margin (25-15, 25-16 and 25-19) Friday evening at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium. With the victory, the Owls improve to 17-7 overall and to 6-4 within the Northeast-10 Conference. The Hawks snap a three-game winning streak and fall to 7-12 overall and 2-6 within conference play.
Tencza began the game strong, recording six kills within the first set for the Hawks. Holland McNabb (Huntington Beach, Calif.) contributed three kils of her own and Shannon Douglas (Rochester, N.H.) posted two kills of her own in the first set. Defensively, Margaret Tereschuk (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and Tencza notched three digs in the first set loss.
Once again in the second set, Tencza led the team with four kills to her credit. Natalie Steinwart (Aurora, Ill.), the Hawks primary setter, contributed two service aces to aid Saint Anselm in the second set. Defensively, Tereschuk again notched three digs in the second set and Melissa Ouellet (Salem, N.H.) posted a solo block in the defeat.
In addition to Tencza's four kills, Kyla Gustavson (Nashua, N.H.) contributed two kills of her own in the third set loss to the Owls. Defensively, the Hawks recorded 13 total digs in the third set and seven different players recorded at least one dig. Samantha Elliott (Cumberland, R.I.) came off the bench and recorded two kills and two blocks, one solo and one assist.
Cumulatively, Tencza led the Hawks with 14 kills. Steinwart assisted 30 Saint Anselm kills and Tereschuk led the way with nine digs. For the Owls, Megan Lyons recorded 12 of the 36 Southern Connecticut State University kills. Kimberly Lachowicz recorded 22 assists and six different Owls recorded at least four digs in the defeat.
The Hawks return to action tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, Oct. 21, at 12:00 p.m. as they will face-off against the Chargers of the University of New Haven. The Chargers are undefeated in Northeast-10 Conference play, posting a 9-0 record amongst NE-10 foe.
