Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Edged By River Hawks In Overtime, 2-1

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Despite a Keesen Howe (Norwich, Conn.) goal early in the contest, the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team fell to the River Hawks of the University of Massachusetts – Lowell by a 2-1 overtime margin Saturday afternoon at Melucci Field.  With the victory, the River Hawks improve to 8-4 overall and 8-2 within the Northeast-10 Conference.  Saint Anselm falls to 5-7-2 on the season and to 2-6-1 within conference play.

Homero Morais scored the game-winning goal for the River Hawks at 98:02 of the first overtime period.  At the top of the box, Matheus Candido one-touched a ball over his head that caught the foot of a streaking Morais.  Near the left post Morais chipped the ball into the net and past the diving Hawks goaltender Eric Moriarty (Center Harbor, N.H.) for the score.

Howe's fifth goal of the season came at 7:46 of the first half to grant Saint Anselm the early 1-0 lead.  Following a George Lamptey (Worcester, Mass.) throw-in along the left sideline, the ball was headed out of the goal box by a River Hawks defender.  The ball was corralled by Howe who side-stepped another defender and looped the ball over the head of UMass Lowell goaltender Connor Askins for the goal.

Daniel Galvin scored his sixth goal of the season to knot the score at one apiece at 65:07 of the second half.  Off of a free-position kick for the River Hawks, the ball was knocked down by a Saint Anselm defender near the top of the box.  The ensuing rebound was charged by Galvin, who spun around and fired the ball into the cage for the game-tying goal.

UMass Lowell goaltender Connor Askins collected the victory, turning aside five-of-six shots on net.  Moriarty drew the loss, allowing two goals on two shots on net.  Saint Anselm out-shot the River Hawks by a 14-to-9 margin.

The Hawks return to action this Wednesday, Oct. 19 as they travel to Bentley University to face-off against the Falcons in a 3:30 p.m. tilt.  Stay up-to-date with the latest news, including game previews and recaps, directly from the Saint Anselm College athletic department by friending us on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/STAHawks) and following us on Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/STAHawks).
