MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Anselm College men's soccer team fell to the Ravens of Franklin Pierce University by a 1-0 overtime final Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 4-5-2 overall and to 1-4-1 within the Northeast-10 Conference. The nationally-ranked Ravens, who were voted third overall amongst Division II soccer teams by the National Soccer Coaches' Association of America, remain undefeated, accumulating an unblemished record in both overall (9-0) and conference (5-0) play.
Diego Tabares scored the game-winning goal at 95:32 of the first overtime period. A ball was sent upfield by forward Victor Goncalves and the streaking Tabares eluded two Saint Anselm defenders at the top of the box. Tabares forced the ball past the lunging Hawks goaltender Eric Moriarty (Center Harbor, N.H.) to seal the victory for the visitors.
George Lamptey (Worcester, Mass.) led all Saint Anselm players with three shots total. Joshua Rocco (North Reading, Mass.), Cliff Parker (Cromwell, Conn.) and Brian Ayers (Potomac, Md.) each had a shot on goal in the contest.
Moriarty turned aside six-of-seven shots on goal and drew his fourth loss of the season. In addition, a goal-line block by defenseman Andrew Parker (East Haddam, Conn.) earned a team save for the Hawks. Vinny Papageorgiou went the distance in net, halting all three Hawks shots on goal for the shutout.
The Hawks return to action Saturday, Oct. 8 as they travel to Southern Connecticut State University to play in a 4:00 p.m. match.
