Hawks Edged by Yellow Jackets 60-54
Manchester, NH (January 29) – Megan Howard (St. Paul, MN) recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as Saint Anselm fell to American International 60-54 in Northeast-10 conference action Saturday afternoon at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium. Adriana Johnson (Tobyhanna, PA) led the way for the Yellow Jackets with 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field.
The loss drops Saint. Anselm to 8-11 overall and 5-10 in the NE-10. AIC, ranked 6th in the NCAA East regional poll, improves to 14-6 overall and 10-5 in the NE-10. The Hawks battled hard the entire game, leading by as many as five in the first half. They nearly drew even with the Yellow Jackets late in the game on what appeared to be a three-pointer from Curran Leighton (Dover, NH). However, after a quick meeting of the officials, it was ruled a two-point basket, making the score 55-54 in favor of AIC with just 11 seconds remaining.
The Yellow Jackets would sink five of their next six free throw attempts to close out the victory as the Hawks failed to get another shot attempt. Saint. Anselm struggled offensively, shooting just 33% from the field, and below 30% in the first half. Despite their shooting woes, the Hawks went into the locker room trailing by just two and were able to take advantage of 15 AIC turnovers.
Next up, Saint Anselm Women will take on their cross-city rivals Southern New Hampshire on Wednesday. The Hawks beat the Lady Penmen in the first matchup this season 53-45. For more information, log on to athletics.anselm.edu.
