North Andover, Mass. (January 2) -- Saint Anselm held a nine-point lead early in the second half before Merrimack rallied in the final minutes for a 62-57 victory in Northeast-10 Conference play at the Volpe Center on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks fall to 5-6 overall and 2-5 in league play.
The Hawks jumped out to an early 6-0 over the game's opening five minutes and pushed the lead into double digits at 16-4 on a three-point play from junior Megan Howard (St. Paul, Minn.). After the Warriors cut it to 10 on a layup by Valerie Avebe, Sarah Craft (Lawrence, Kan.) knocked down a three from the top of the key, followed by a putback by Curran Leighton (Dover, N.H.) for the 21-6 advantage.
After Merrimack cut the lead down to 11 at 25-14 with 4:22 left in the first half, the Hawks stretched the lead back to 30-16 after a three-pointer from the corner by Briana Jones (White Plains, N.Y.). The Warriors closed the period on an 8-0 run over the last three minutes however and the Hawks took a 30-24 lead into the halftime break. Leighton led all scorers with 11 first-half points, while Jones was the leading rebounder with seven boards.
The opening six minutes of the second half were all Hawks as the visitors held a 40-31 lead with 14:08 left after a layup from freshman Meg Morrissey (South Kingstown, R.I.). Merrimack answered with its first sustained scoring run of the game as the Warriors scored nine unanswered and tied the game at 40-40 on a free throw line jumper by from Kelly Schatzlein.
Neither team led by more than two points over the next 10 minutes and it was Saint Anselm with a 57-56 lead with 2:22 remaining after a spinning runner in the lane by Morrissey. Merrimack regained the lead with 1:56 left on a layup by Schatzlein and scored the game's last six points as the Warriors rallied for the five-point victory.
Howard led the Hawks with a 20-point, 13-rebound double-double, along with 13 points from Leighton and a career-high 10-point effort from Morrissey.
