Manchester, N.H. (January 5) -- Saint Anselm couldn't overcome shooting woes as the Hawks fell to visiting Le Moyne by a 40-33 final on Wednesday night at Stoutenburgh Gym. The Hawks held the Dolphins to 16 percent shooting in the second half, but were unable to pull out the victory.
Saint Anselm held an early 5-4 lead after a three-pointer from the wing by sophomore Curran Leighton (Dover, N.H.) before the Dolphins quickly gained control of the action. After taking the lead on a basket by Danielle Felice, the visitors embarked on an 18-5 run to move to a 22-10 lead with 4:22 left. Le Moyne held the Hawks without a basket for 8:36 until junior Megan Howard (St. Paul, Minn.) scored on a putback with 36 seconds left in the first half to cut the lead down 22-12. The Dolphins added two late free throws to take the 24-12 lead into the break.
The second half was all Le Moyne as the visitors built the lead to as many as 13 points during the period. Saint Anselm cut the lead down to six at 36-30 on a three from Epiphany Smith (Springdale, Ark.) with 2:15 left before the visitors came away with the seven-point win.
Saint Anselm was led by a 16-point, 11-rebound double-double from Howard, the only Hawk in double figures. Courtney Coryea was the lone Dolphin in double figures at 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Saint Anselm falls to 5-7 overall and 2-6 in Northeast-10 play, while Le Moyne is now 4-8 overall and 1-7 in the league. The Hawks are back in action on Saturday afternoon, traveling to Adelphi for a 1:30 p.m. start.
