Hawks Pull Away Late in 92-81 Win Over Owls

New Haven, Conn. (January 19) – Saint Anselm overcame an early second-half deficit at Southern Connecticut on Wednesday night as the Hawks pulled away late for the 92-81 victory over the Owls at Moore Fieldhouse. The Hawks are receiving votes in the NABC Division II Top 25 Poll for the fourth straight week. The victory is the 15th straight for the Hawks over Southern Connecticut dating back 17 years to the 1993-1994 season.

The Hawks jumped out to a 23-14 lead with 10:51 left in the first half after John Mariano (Naugatuck, Conn.) converted a layup off an assist from Thomas Baudinet (Watertown, Conn.). Southern answered though with an 11-2 run over the next three minutes and after a deep three from Trevor Hamlet, the game was tied at 25-25. Andrew Zito gave the Owls their first lead since the opening minutes at 28-27 with 6:37 left in the period and Southern led by as many as eight before taking a 41-35 lead into the halftime break. Freshman Allen Harris (Roslindale, Mass.) led the Hawks with 12 first-half points as the Hawks shot 38.9 percent from the field.

The Owls pushed the lead up to 51-44 with 17:36 left in the second half before the Hawks answered with a 13-0 run and led 57-51 with 13:14 remaining. Southern battled back and tied the game at 57-57 and the game remained tied over the next few minutes. With the game at 66-66 with 7:04 left, the Hawks took the lead for good on a Harris layup and pushed the advantage to double digits at 82-72 on a pair of free throws from Dino Mallios (Winthrop, Mass.). The Hawks hit 13 free throws down the stretch to wrap up the 11-point victory.

Harris, the reigning Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week, led the Hawks with 24 points, followed by Baudinet with 23 points. Baudinet now has 1724 career points, placing him seventh on the Saint Anselm career scoring list and just two points shy of sixth. Jack Keough (Owego, N.Y.) also finished in double figures with 21 points. The Hawks outscored the Owls at the free throw line by a 31-7 margin as well.

Saint Anselm improves to 13-3 overall and 9-3 in the Northeast-10, while Southern Connecticut falls to 9-7 overall and 6-6 league play.
