–The Saint Anselm volleyball team fell to
the crosstown rival Southern New Hampshire University by a score of
3-0 on Tuesday night in a non-conference matchup. The loss drops
the Hawks to 0-3 overall, while the win raises the Penmen's
record to 2-0.
Falling behind early, the Hawks dropped the first game in the
match by a score of 25-17. Junior Charlotte Tencza
(Greenfield, Mass.) led the Hawks in
kills with three and contributed four digs. Rachel
Flaherty (Cold Spring, N.Y) led the Hawks with four
assists in the game.
In the second game, the Hawks started off much stronger, leading
5-4 early on. Saint Anselm slowed down and fell into a 15-10
deficit, but rallied back to cut it to 19-18. The Hawks stayed in
the game, but eventually fell 25-23. Flaherty tallied 10 assists
and three digs. As a team, the Hawks had 15 kills, to just 11 by
the Penmen.
The third game began the same as the second, with the two teams
knotted at five points apiece. The game continued in a
back-and-forth manner with neither team controlling a lead more
than four points until SNHU clutched a five-point lead at 15-10.
The Penmen held their lead to win the game 25-18, winning the match
3-0.
In the match, the Hawks were led by Lauren Ross (Dracut,
Mass.), who tallied eight kills, while Flaherty
contributed 23 assists.
The Hawks will next play their first home match against Franklin
Pierce on Saturday, September 11th. The match is scheduled to start
at 2:30 pm.
