Manchester, N.H. (September 7) -- In the season
opener on Tuesday night, the Saint Anselm women's soccer team
dropped a 1-0 final to No. 18 ranked University of Bridgeport in
non-conference action at Knights Field. This marks the fourth
straight year that the two teams have met, with the Purple Knights
holding the 2-1-1 edge.
After a scoreless first half, the Purple Knights struck early in
the second half as Rakel Hinriksdottir (Akureyri,
Iceland) scored on a header following a cross from
teammate Danielle Weir (Bo'Ness, Scotland) at the
49:32 mark. Bridgeport outshot the Hawks by a 21-3 margin,
including 11-2 in the second half.
Senior netminder Jackie Cooney
(Braintree, Mass.) made nine saves for the Hawks in the
defeat, while Julia Hansson (Tocksfors, Sweden)
did make a save for the Purple Knights in the shutout win.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 0-1 overall, while Bridgeport
improves to 2-1 overall. Saint Anselm returns to action on Friday
afternoon as the team travels to American International for a
Northeast-10 match beginning at 4 p.m.
