Springfield, Mass. – The Saint Anselm
women's soccer team traveled to Northeast-10 Conference opponent
American International College and battled hard before falling to
the 19th-ranked Yellow Jackets by a score of 3-1. The loss drops
the Hawks to 0-2 overall (0-1, Northeast-10) and improves the
Yellow Jackets record to 3-0 (1-0, Northeast-10).
The Yellow Jackets began the game strong, taking six shots in
the first 22 minutes. Despite the effort American International put
forth, the Hawks struck first in the 23rd minute when Jennifer
Pearl (Stoughton, Mass.) netted Saint Anselm's first
goal of the season. The celebrations did not last long though as
the Yellow Jackets responded just 29 seconds later with a goal from
Sarah Tomlinson (Clitheroe, England). The Yellow
Jackets struck again in the 27th minute on a goal by
Caroline Heron (Montrose, Scotland), which proved
to be the game-winning goal.
The second half stayed scoreless for 15 minutes as Hawks
goalkeeper Jackie Cooney
(Braintree, Mass) and Yellow Jacket goalkeeper
Amber McLeen (Leeds, England) each made a save. In
the 62nd minute, AIC tacked on one final goal, giving them the 3-1
victory.
Cooney made 11 saves, including five in two minutes late in the
second half. For AIC, McLeen stopped three Hawk shots.
The Hawks open their home schedule this Sunday at 1:00 pm on
Melucci Field to take on Assumption College.
