Manchester, N.H – The Saint Anselm Hawks
women's soccer team played in a Northeast-10 Conference game
against the Chargers on New Haven. The game went into double
overtime and when time expired, the contest remained scoreless. The
tie brings Saint Anselm's record to 2-4-1 overall (Northeast-10,
2-3-1) and improves New Haven's record to 3-3-2 (Northeast-10,
2-2-2).
The first half was played in a back-and-forth fashion, with both
teams not allowing many offensive chances. Saint Anselm put just
four shots on goal, while New Haven hit the target only five times.
Senior captain goalkeeper Jackie Cooney
(Braintree, Mass.) made five stops for the Hawks to keep
the half scoreless. Terese Vercollone (Pembroke,
Mass.) and Kelli Duggan
(Easton, Mass.) each took two shots and put one on
net.
The second half began as the first half ended, with both sides
stymieing each other and not allowing a goal. Both teams made runs
and crosses at the goal, but no shots found the back of the net as
regulation ended. Jennifer Pearl
(Stoughton, Mass.) attempted three shots, and put
two of them on target. Cooney made four more stops for the Hawks in
the second half.
The overtime went the full 20 minutes with a combined
three shots on goal for both sides. Cooney finished the game with 9
saves, while Duggan and Pearl each finished with three shots on
goal.
The Hawks will next play at Saint Michael's on September
29th. The game will kick off at 4:00 pm.
