Manchester, N.H. – The Saint Anselm
women's soccer team took on Northeast-10 Conference opponent
Stonehill College this afternoon. Junior forward Teresa
Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.) scored the game-winning
goal with 32 minutes left in the game. The win improves the Hawks
record to 2-4 (2-3, Northeast-10), while the loss drops the
Skyhawks record to 5-3 (4-2, Northeast-10).
Stonehill controlled the game early in the first half, shooting
the ball nine times in the first 20 minutes. Despite the offensive
attack, freshman forward Lindsay Johnson
(Hooksett, N.H.) scored her first goal in a Hawk uniform
in the 32nd minute. Senior captain Jackie Cooney
(Braintree, Mass.) kept the Skyhawks off the score sheet
by saving five shots in the first 45 minutes.
The second half started with Stonehill winning a penalty kick
just five minutes into the period. Kristie St. Martin
(Providence, R.I.) converted on the penalty for the
Skyhawks, tying the game at 1-1. In the 58th minute, Vercollone
netted the game-winning goal on a great shot from the right side of
the 18-yard box. The goal was her second of the season.
In the game, Cooney made eight saves, while Erika Sartor
(Andover, Mass.) assisted on Johnson's goal and Emily Rooney
(Quincy, Mass.) assisted on Vercollone's goal.
