Sucharewicz Breaks Single-Game Home Run Record

MANCHESTER, N.H. –

Junior Matt Sucharewicz (Peabody, Mass.) broke the Hawks' all-time record for home runs in a game, going 4-for-5 with three homers in the first game of today's Northeast-10 doubleheader against Assumption College to propel the Hawks past the Greyhounds, 9-2.  The Hawks' offense continued to fire in game two, plating 11 runs on 18 hits, but the defense struggled, as they fell in the night cap by a score of 13-11.  The Hawks are now 12-20 (9-17 NE-10) and the Greyhounds are 23-23 (10-16 NE-10).

Game 1: Saint Anselm 9, Assumption 2

The Greyhounds got off to a good start in the top of the first, as Derek Migrants and Blake Youngblood led off with back-to-back singles.  Wally Derosier struck out, but Mike Foley then walked to load the bases.  Starting pitcher John Healy (Cranston, R.I.) got Drew Dombkowski to strike out on a called third strike, but he then allowed a two-out, two-RBI single to Shane Keddy to give the Greyhounds an early 2-0 lead.

The Hawks were unfazed by the top of the inning, as James Garrigan (Plymouth, Mass.) started things off with a one-out double down the left field line.  Robert Kelly (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) extended his hitting streak to 10 games, scoring Garrigan on another double down the line, and Matt Sucharewicz took a trot around the bases, hitting a two-run homer to straightaway center.

Healy set the Greyhounds down in order in the top of the second, and the Hawks came back off the bench swinging.  Eric Simm (Salem, N.H.) led off with a single to right field, and Joshua Lafond (Goffstown, N.H.) followed him with another single to right.  Richie Manzi (Plymouth, N.H.) laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners, but then arrived safely at first due to an error by third baseman Nick NapoliJames Garrigan picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly to left field and Kelly flew out for the second out of the inning.  Matt Sucharewicz kept the inning alive with an RBI single to right, and Matt Stone (West Roxbury, Mass.) followed suit with another two-out RBI, giving the Hawks a solid 6-2 lead after two innings.

Rett Ostafin (Avon, Conn.) got hit by a pitch and stole second to start off the third inning.  The next two batters got out, but Richie Manzi roped a liner to deep center field, scoring Ostafin on an RBI triple.

Matt Sucharewicz hit solo homers in his next two at-bats to give the Hawks a 9-2 lead by the end of the sixth.

The Greyhounds had two hits in the top of the seventh inning to put a pair of runners on base for the first time since the first inning, but Healy struck out Migrants to strand them there. The Hawks threatened with two singles of their own in the bottom of the seventh, but neither of them crossed the plate either.

John Healy allowed a two-out single to Mike Foley in the top of the eighth, and that was the last base runner for the Greyhounds, as Myke Fortier (Andover, Mass.) set them down in order in the top of the ninth.

Matt Sucharewicz led the charge, going 4-for-5 five with a record-setting three home runs, five RBI and three runs scored.  Senior Eric Simm went 3-for-4 with a run in his final appearance at Sullivan Park, and classmate Matt Stone went 2-for-5 with an RBI.

John Healy allowed just two runs on eight hits while striking out six in eight full innings, and Fortier pitched a perfect ninth inning.  Frank Flynn gave up the first six runs, four earned, on eight hits in 1.2 innings, and Dave McLean ceded the final three on six hits in 6.1 innings.

John Healy captured his sixth win of the season in the game, which places him in second all-time for the Hawks in single-season wins, as well as in sixth in career wins (9) with two full seasons left to move up further.  He currently has an ERA of 1.72 on the season, and unless he elevates it in either of tomorrow's games, he will sit in second place all-time on the Hawks for single-season ERA.  Additionally, his current career ERA of 2.85 also temporarily places him in second all-time, although he is only a sophomore.

Game 2: Assumption 13, Saint Anselm 11

The Greyhounds' offense woke up in game two, plating seven runs in the first three innings.  Blake Youngblood started them off with a one-out double to left center.  Wally Derosier made it first and third with a single to right center, and Mike Foley drove in Youngblood with a single to left.  Drew Dombkowski traded places with Foley at first with a ground out to short, and Shane Keddy scored Derosier with a single to left center, making it 2-0 Greyhounds after a half inning.

Richie Manzi drew a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the first and James Garrigan then singled to right.  Matt Sucharewicz walked to load the bases with one out, and Matt Stone drove in the Hawks' first run with a sacrifice fly to left.

The Greyhounds kept it going in the top of the second, as Migrants hit a one-out single up the middle.  Blake Youngblood then hit a bomb over the wall in left center, making it 4-1 Greyhounds.

The Hawks, determined not to let the game get away from them, fought back in the bottom of the second.  After starter Joe Piscitelli set down the first two batters, Joshua Lafond kept the inning alive with a single to short and got to second on a throwing error.  He then advanced to third on a wild pitch, and was driven home by Manzi on a single to left center.  Manzi stole second and Garrigan drove him in with a double down the left field line.  Kelly kept the two-out rally going with a walk, but Sucharewicz then grounded to short to end the inning, but not before the Hawks cut the deficit back down to one.

The Greyhounds' offense did not back off one bit in the top of the third, as Joe Lopes got on with a single to left.  Dan Bradley got hit by a pitch and Derek Migrants then smashed a three-run homer to straightaway center to put the Greyhounds on top 7-3.

The Hawks did not get a hit in the bottom of the third, and the Greyhounds threatened with a two-out rally in the top of the fourth, loading the bases on a hit batsman, an error and a single.  Nevertheless, Hawk reliever Mike Fantini (Haverhill, Mass.) got Nick Napoli to pop out to second baseman Steven Panza (Watertown, Mass.) to end the inning without allowing a run.

Richie Manzi started the Hawks' comeback in the bottom of the fourth with a one-out single up the middle.  He got to second on a wild pitch and James Garrigan drove him in with a single to right.  Garrigan then got to second on another wild pitch, and Robert Kelly smacked an RBI double to right field for his first of three hits in the game, extending his hit streak to 11 games.  However, he then got picked off by Piscitelli for the second out.  Matt Sucharewicz kept the momentum going with a walk followed by a single by Matt Stone, and Steven Panza then drove in Sucharewicz with a single to right before Eric Simm popped up for the third out.  At the end of the fourth, the Hawks once again trailed by one, 7-6.

The Greyhounds broke the game open in the top of the fifth, plating four runs on five hits and a walk, before Mike O'Rourke (Falmouth, Mass.) came in and got his first batter, Nick Napoli, to ground into a double play to end the inning. They then made it 13-6 in the top of the seventh, as Mike Foley led off with a single to center and stole second.  Shane Keddy hit an RBI double to left center, and Napoli made up for his previous at-bat, scoring Keddy on a double to right.

The Hawks were not willing to give up just yet, and continued to fight in the bottom of the seventh.  Eric Simm drew a one-out walk and David Giarrusso (Cranston, R.I.) got his second hit of the day with a single to left.  Joshua Lafond drove in Simm with a double to right center, and Manzi picked up an RBI ground out to the pitcher.

They kept it going in the bottom of the eighth, as Kelly led off with a walk and Matt Sucharewicz then hit his fourth home run of the day to bring the Hawks within three.  Panza then doubled to left center, and Simm got on with an infield single.  Giarrusso picked up a one-out RBI with a single up the middle.  Lafond flew out for the second out of the inning, but pinch-runner Eric Baca (Franklin, N.H.) ran on contact, apparently unaware that there was only one out, and got doubled off at second to end the inning.

Fortier set down the Greyhounds 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth, and the Hawks had three outs left to score two runs.  Kelly kept the Hawks' hopes alive by hitting a two-out double off the wall in left center and he got to third on a wild pitch.  Matt Sucharewicz then stepped up to the plate and smashed a fly ball to deep center field.  The crowd left to their feet, hoping it would be home run number five, tying the game, but it fell just short, as center fielder Derek Migrants caught it on the warning track for the final out of the game, giving the Greyhounds a 13-11 victory.

The top of the Greyhound order was especially productive, accounting for 14 of the Greyhounds' 20 hits, as well as nine runs and eight RBI.  Robert Kelly, David Giarrusso, and James Garrigan all had three hits and a run in the game and combined for three doubles and four RBI.  Additionally, Richie Manzi went 2-for-5 with a walk, three runs, and two RBI.

Kelly hit his 15th double of the season in the game, placing him in second all-time for the Hawks in single-season doubles.  In addition to breaking the all-time single-game record for home runs, Sucharewicz's four home runs today give him seven on the season, placing him in 10th all-time, and he is tied for second in RBI in a season with 40.

Joe Piscitelli earned his first win of the season, allowing eight runs on 13 hits and six walks in 6.1 innings.  Matt Metcalf allowed the Hawks' final three runs on two hits in one full inning, and Tim Dupuis earned his 11th save, allowing three hits in 1.2 scoreless innings.

Sean Hayden (Haverhill, Mass.) allowed seven runs on nine hits in the first three innings, taking the loss.  Mike Fantini gave up four on six hits in 1.1 innings, and Mike O'Rourke ceded the final two runs on four hits in 2.2 innings.  Senior Myke Fortier came in in the top of the eighth and allowed just one hit over two scoreless innings in his final outing at Sullivan Park.

The Hawks conclude their season tomorrow morning, as they take on the Greyhounds once again in a non-conference doubleheader at Assumption beginning at 11:00 am.
