Hawks Fall in Season Opener 2-1 to Spartans

Manchester, N.H. (November 19) --  In their opening game against Castleton tonight, the Saint Anselm Hawks men's hockey team was defeated 2-1 at home, despite 31 saves by senior goaltender Kevin Fairweather (Woburn, Mass.). The Hawks fell short, making use of only one of seven power plays.

It wasn't until late in the first period that Stuart Stefan (Delhi, Ont.) opened the scoring for Castleton. Stefan scored with 3:48 remaining in the period. The goal was on a power play caused by John Hyslip's (Andover, Mass.) checking penalty.

Five minutes into the second period, Brett Zeggil (Priceville, Ont.) scored for Castleton, giving them a 2-0 lead. Castleton had three penalties in the period which the Hawks were unable to capitalize on.

Saint Anselm scored their lone goal of the game with 12 minutes remaining in the game. Timothy King (Weymouth, Mass.) scored in front of the net on passes from Coleman Noonan (Norfolk, Mass.) and Paul Snell (Groton, Mass.). The goal was King's first of the season, and the first for the Hawks, who fall to 0-1 overall, and 0-1 in the ECAC East with the loss. The Spartans improve to 1-0 overall.

Saint Anselm will take the ice against tomorrow at home, when the match up against Skidmore College at 3:00 pm at the Sullivan Arena.
