New Haven, Conn. (October 8th) – Playing
their first of three games in six days, the Saint Anselm Hawks
women's soccer team traveled to the Southern Connecticut Owls this
evening. The game ended in the 105th minute, as the Hawks found
themselves on the losing side of a 2-1 contest. The Hawks fall to
3-6-1 overall (3-5-1, Northeast-10), while the win improves the
Owls record to 6-3-3 overall (4-3-3, Northeast-10).
The first half contained nearly no offense, as the Owls managed
five shots total and the Hawks took two shots. Senior co-captain
Jackie
Cooney (Braintree, Mass.) made one stop in the first
half for Saint Anselm, and Kelli Duggan
(Easton, Mass.) took the Hawks only shot on goal.
20 minutes into the second half, the first goal of the game was
scored on a Jenna Mallico (Milford, Mass.) goal
for the Owls. The Hawks tied the game at 1-1 with just
two-and-a-half minutes left in the game on a Teresa
Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.) goal, sending the game into
overtime. The goal was her third of the season.
The game ended in the second overtime in the 105th minute, when
Laura Barberia (Pamplona, Spain) scored her third
goal of the season.
For the Hawks, Cooney made seven saves, and Vercollone put two
shots on target.
The Hawks were outshot 20-6 in the game.
Saint Anselm returns home on Sunday to take on Saint Rose, who
is ranked number one in the country. The game will kick off at 3:30
pm.
