Manchester, N.H. (October 7th) -- The Saint
Anselm Hawks played in their second straight overtime game this
week, which was ended by Joshua Rocco (North reading,
Mass.) for the second consecutive game. The Hawks went on
to win the match 4-3, upsetting #25 Merrimack, and improved their
record to 3-6-1 overall (3-3-1, Northeast-10). The loss drops the
Warriors record to 7-3 overall (3-3, Northeast-10).
Merrimack scored in the 20th minute on a Ben Paradis
(Tiverton, R.I.) goal that found the right side of the
net. The Hawks countered with a goal of their own in the 28th
minute when Cliff Parker (Cromwell, Conn.)
threw the ball in from the left side of the field
towards the 18-yard box. Justin Colella (Wilmington,
Mass.) headed the ball towards the goal, which found the
back of the net.
In the second half, The Hawks jumped on the score sheet early
for their second goal on a great pass from Keesen Howe
(Norwich, Conn.) along the right side of the end line. The
ball ran in front of the face of the goal, and Dave Hugel
(Simsbury, Conn.) shot the ball to the back side of the
net. In the 61st minute, the Hawks gave away a penalty. The shot
was turned away by sophomore goalkeeper Eric Moriarty
(Center Harbor, N.H.) on a great effort on the right side
of the goal.
In the 70th minute, Merrimack added another goal from
Adam Leone (East Northport, N.Y.), scoring the
second goal of the game for Merrimack. The Warriors would add a
third goal in the 73rd minute on a Robbie Sabadoz (Ottawa,
Ontario) goal, which was countered by a Saint Anselm goal
with just nine seconds left by Rocco, sending the game into
overtime.
The game ended exactly 5:30 seconds into the first overtime
period. Justin Labonte (Pembroke, Mass.) took a
shot from just outside the 18-yard box which was saved by the
keeper. Rocco scored his second goal of the game off the rebound,
which ended the game for Saint Anselm.
For the Hawks, Moriarty made nine saves en route to the win,
while Rocco's two goals led the Hawks. Howe had two assists
to go along with three shots on goal.
The Hawks return to the field on Saturday to take on Stonehill
on the Road. The game kicks off at 11:00 am.
