Lowell, Mass. (October 4th) -- The Saint Anselm
Hawks men's soccer team played their postponed rain game this
afternoon against UMass Lowell. The game which was originally
scheduled for Saturday afternoon was won by the Hawks 1-0 in double
overtime. The win improves the Hawks to 2-6-1 (Northeast-10,
2-3-1), while the loss drops the River Hawks record to 1-7-1
(Northeast-10, 0-5-1).
The first half was evenly contested, as Saint Anselm shot the
ball four times, and put two shots on goal. UMass took five shots,
and put one on target. Eric Moriarty
(Center Harbor, N.H.) made two saves for the Hawks in the
half.
In the second half, each goalkeeper kept their opponents off the
score sheet again, as Moriarty made two more saves and River Hawk
goalkeeper Connor Askins (Boston, Mass.) made one
stop for UMass Lowell. With the goalkeepers playing so well, the
game was forced into overtime.
UMass had the advantage in the first overtime period, as they
out shot the Hawks 4-1, but were unable to break the deadlock.
The game remained scoreless into the second overtime period, until
in the 107th minute Joshua Rocco (North
Reading, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal, which was
his first goal of the season.
Moriarty made five saves in the shutout win.
The Hawks return to the pitch on Wednesday, October 6th to take
on Merrimack College at home. The game will begin at 4:00 pm.
